Reading PC disks on Amiga
I've formatted a HD disk with one hole taped over to 720kb, then put Tequilla on it (The disk transfer program). At the moment though I can't get my Amiga to read the disk. The FAQ from the Fellow team says I have to find the file PC0 in storage/dosdrivers. I have searched my whole Workbench 2 disk and the Extras disk but find no reference to PC/dos drivers. The ALE How to Transfer Files says to type MOUNT PC0: in the Shell. This doesn't work either. I know you can get an Amiga to read 720kb PC disks, so could somebody tell me where on the Workbench disks I should look. I have Workbench 2.05 as supplied with an A600. I also have the Extras disk.

Did you find any app on either disk that mentioned or said CrossDOS? I can't remember when CBM first started to ship this with the workbench disks. I thought it was about in this time frame

According to Workbench Nostalgia, AmigaOS 2.1 was the first version that included Crossdos.
If you use an earlier version, there won't be CrossDOS available. |

I thought Workbench 2.1 was just 2.05 rounded up, but that site has put me right. Thanks for the help, I haven't looked for CrossDOS yet, but I'll boot it up later and do another thorough search through the disks. Would Workbench 3 work on an A600 using a 2.0 ROM? Or does it need the 2Mb of RAM the A1200 has? Basically I could get hold of Workbench 3 disks easier than trying to get version 2.1.

AmigaOS 3.x will not work with your 2.x ROMs, but if you can get your hands on OS 3.1 disks easily, you might want to try if the 3.x CrossDOS works with 2.x - they didn't change much (if anything) of CrossDOS between 2.x and 3.x.
You'll need the following files from a set of 3.x disks: EXTRAS3.1:l/CrossDOSFileSystem STORAGE3.1:DOSDrivers/PC0 STORAGE3.1:DOSDrivers/PC0.info Copy them to SYS:L/ (aka "L:") and "SYS:Storage/Dosdrivers/". Now doubleclick the PC0 icon in your Storage/DOSDrivers directory and you should be able to read MS-DOS disks. |
