What do you use to image an Amiga Compact Flash

Howdy, I got a CF card from Amiga Kit a few months back, and having spent some time populating it with the stuff I want, I decided it's time I made a backup image of it for safety.

So far, for backing up on the PC I've tried using Paragon 2013, nope... SDImager which gives an error just before writing an image back to a CF card, and HDD Raw Copy portable, which mostly worked.

I say mostly because although the Amiga booted up, I got a message that the DH2 partition wasn't working. If I cancel out of the message it boots up okay and I have DH0 and DH1 which is something, at least.

Any suggestions to fix this or recommendations for other programs? Thanks guys.

No. It's quite a simple program so not sure what options there are?
I choose my cf card on the source screen then hit continue, the choose to image it to a file, and then hit start I think. Writing an image back is just as easy.

Would this work if I wanted to make image of SD card and write to CF too?

I doubt it as I think the image has to match the card size exactly, but I dont know.

Yup, that seemed to work, but gave me the DH2 unrecognised problem. Maybe me.... Stupid question: An image from a 4Gb card won't have a problem fitting on another 4Gb card, right? And iIf I'm writing an image from an Amiga friendly CF card, should that trump any card compatibility issues with the destination card or are they still going to be a problem?

I try and always use the same brand of cf card so I dont risk miniature differences, and no I dont think it will fix amiga unfriendly cards.

I have used Winuaeto make an image of the drive. I have just formatted my PC, so Winuae is not installed for me to give more detail, but it has worked well for me.

I'll definitely give that a try. I'm wondering though, if each program I've tried is working fine, but the 4Gb Amiga Kit CF I'm copying doesn't quite "fit" on a SanDisk Extreme III 4Gb card. I have an 8Gb one, so maybe I should try wriring on to that.

Regarding my card that works apart from DH2 not being recognised, does that sound like anything I could fix with HDTools?

That's the problem when you write the image back. If the target card has fewer logical blocks than the source card, it will get truncated. PFS3AIO will refuse to mount the broken partition, other filesystems may run into strange problems.

Just do the partitions + filesystems to the destination card from scratch and do a filecopy from the image inside WinUAE.. ;-)

The file copy must be slow for 4GB?... as opposed to image write.

Indeed. I know it's not good for the card and dont do it often but I use 8gb cards and it's so much faster to restore from an image that way (well in my experience anyway)

Easy way to tell is to read your 4GB card to a file and compare sizes with the file you were trying to write. Writing the 4GB image to the 8GB card is a good way to rule out issues with the card too.

Writing files is painful especially if you are filling the card. I always fill my images in winuae then when I'm happy with it, write out the whole card with win32diskimager. As others have said this minimises repeated writes and preserves the card.

Some CF cards can just be plain incompatible, or worse, fakes, so find a source and brand that works for you and stick with it.
