A-500 Plus + A590

I've got an A-500 Plus and I'm trying to set up an A590 hard drive.

The drive itself is quite old and ideally I would look to replace it with a newer drive or a CF solution but I just want to make sure everything works OK first.

I'm powering up the A590 first and then the Amiga. When I power up the Amiga, the hard drive light comes on briefly, and then I can boot the Amiga as normal from the workbench disk.

The dip switches are set as follows:
1 - off
2 - on
3 - on
4 - on

If pin 1 is set to on, then the hard drive light remains on, and I get a series of warning beeps from the A590.

When I try and set up the partitions and format the disk using the A590 Setup tools I get a "Error-1 on device open" error message.

The jumper on the hard drive is on the pin closest to the molex power socket.

There's 2MB of memory installed and the jumper is set correctly. I've ran an A590 memory test and that confirmed the memory was working OK.

My A500-Plus has 1MB of ram, is using Kickstart 2.0 (37.175) and Workbench 2.04 (37.67).

The A590 is a Rev 6.0, and the hard drive is an XT Western Digital - WD-93028-X.

Has anyone got any suggestions on why I may not be able to partition or format the drive?

You sure it isn't the (mostly dead?) drive that beeps?

ok so has the A590 got its own power supply?

the DIP Switches
Switch 1 - ON: Enables Autoboot
Switch 2 - ON: LUN Enabled - wont matter till you put a scsi drive in
Switch 3 - OFF: Short wait period for drive to spin up. Parity checking enabled
Switch 4 - Reserved (e.g., don't mess with it!)

Jumper Settings
JP1 - 4 = 2MB
JP3 - 1 = XT Drive, you will need change this when you get a scsi HD
JP4 - Do Not Change

I bet those XT Western Digital HDDs are getting rare as even back when they were naff

The A590 has got it's own power supply.

JP1 is set to 2MB and JP3 is set to XT so they look OK.

I'll give those switch settings a try.

The drive sounds like it spins up and wants to work but it wouldn't surprise me if it is dead.
