Devpac 3.x

Would someone be in a position to upload the complete Devpac 3 (all disks and manuals) to the Zone at all?

Thanks in advance.

I'd like this too. I don't know why most places only have one of the disks.

I'm confused. It seems to me that Hisoft still exists and although they don't seem to be active they still own the copyrights to the Devpac suite.

In that regard, wouldn't it be contrary to EAB policy to post it on the zone?
Please disregard this post if the community has already asked them for permission and they said yes. It's only a few months since I have started following Amiga stuff again so I am far from having caught up with these past 15 years news.

Devpac HAS been uploaded to the zone before. And as far as HiSoft are concerned, in the past year, I have emailed them on a few occasions asking if I could still purchase it from them. To this day, I have never had a reply (sadly).

I do own the original 3.x still, but sadly none of the updates they sent out. 3.18 was the last one. Also emailed them ome years ago and asked if it was possible to get hold of the last updates, but never got any replys. Guess they couldn't care less about DevPac.

I am under the impression that it is fine to upload it if it's no longer available for purchase.

From a legal standpoint, ceasing distribution of a product does not give anyone the right to ignore copyrights. However, not defending it actively against such issues might be accepted as an abandon of copyrights of sort so this would indeed possibly be fine although it's still quite a grey area since I do not recall seeing any court cases related to old Amiga software.

There's a way to be sure though:the community could send a lawyer to Hisoft and ask them officially if they are willing to cease enforcing copyrights and/or make it public domain. If they really don't care about it anymore they should be ok with that and that would give Devpac a clear legal status.

It's a bit of work but the Amiga community is thousands strong so it shouldn't be that hard to organize. Hell, just the Amiga section of demo parties require more work, time and money to setup.

Why would we waste our time? We will still pirate it whether they give us permission or not.

Personally, I would rather purchase a physical copy with manuals, but if that is not possible, then I'll download. If HiSoft ever read this post "My money is waiting"

Devpac and SAS/C are good software but now there is vasm and vbcc with the source available, developed and supported. Vasm is a better assembler than Devpac and mostly compatible, Vasm, CED, BDebug and ARexx can give a more powerful and faster assembler environment than Devpac. Vbcc is about on par with SAS/C, with their strengths in different areas. IMO, it would be better to support and enhance what we have available. There is nothing wrong with using the old abandoned software when it's the best solution though.

If people want a really good assembler, then they should look at Barfly and PhxAss. Both are more powerful and MUCH faster than Devpac.
