WHD load and save games
Hi guys,
Just a quick ask - How do I save high scores and save games in WHDload? I'm playing Paradroid and Uridium and Speedball 2 at moment. But Can't get the hig scores to save. Also - if I start an epic session of Frontier or History Line do I need to use a floppy or does WHD keep a save. Thank you Steve Edit - really want to get back to some Microprose games of Special Forces and F19 will they save? About to set them up to my HDD Thanks again Last edited by pubzombie; 10 January 2015 at 02:31. Reason: Edit - microprose |

Reading the documentation that comes with those slaves should answer most of your questions.

During game session WHDLoad only saves into ram (highscores and save games). You have to press the Quitkey, then it's saved to hd. Some games support this via the offical quit option ingame too, e.g. some Lucas Arts games.

Originally WHDLoad would do it at the time you saved the game, but some games didnt like being interrupted, and then you had to wait a while for the system to close the file properly or it would invalidate the hard drive. In fact im pretty sure it was me that made it a feature request for it to save only when you exit the game, safer and not so irritating, you have 32meg of ram to preload the game with no OS swapping, only to have to OS swap to save. |

Yes, indeed a very clever way to do. But it also confuses WHDLoad user from time to time. It should be explained better somehow in the docs (not only in the NoWriteCache tooltype description). Maybe in the splash screen too.

Yes, the slave readme`s mostly explain if saving is supported and if yes what. In general saving works like the original game does it.
Like Retro-Nerd/Galahad explained saving is done after quit the game. You can disable this feature but I wouldn`t recommend this because it is safer even though it feels unnatural. Like Retro-Nerd I would suggest that "How saving works" should be not hidden in the docs. Maybe in "Usage and Options", "Features" or at least in the FAQ section. |
