C64tpc

Quote:
C64TPC is a hardware/software combination to connect your PC with C64. It can run under GNU/Linux and MacOS’ as well as Windows. Via C64TPC, C64 will be able to use PC’s storage divices (HDD, CD/DVD, flash medias, etc.)
Sounds like an interesting project.

That's what PC64 (was that the name?) does for ages, !

You connect the commodore through an X?1541 cable and you can use the PC's drives as if they were C='s

Maybe, but it's runs fine in XP and is portable to other platforms. Anyway, i would prefer something like the 1541U. For now i'm happy with the MMC Replay, which is available since yesterday.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread.... I am looking for a cheap alternative to a floppy drive for my C64 and it seems that the C64tpc is what the doctor ordered, but I am not too sure on the compatability.

Maybe someone can shed some light on this? Thanks!

I have one, but my feelings on it are a bit mixed.

I don't know much of the technical specs of the d64 file format, and how it handles copy-protections, etc, so I am only guessing that my problems with it are due to protections and custom disk loaders.

Bottom line: It does not work on a significant amount of games. The software interface is also a bit buggy.

Disk based C64 games, that aren't just a single PRG file, typically use a fastloader. The only device that supports game fastloaders is the 1541 Ultimate. The Chameleon will also do the trick, but it's still in development. Everything else, which includes C64tpc, sd2iec, 1541-III, and X*1541 cables, only support standard (slow!) C= IEC routines, and in some cases one or two fastloaders like JiffyDOS or Action Replay. They all fail once the game starts and tries to load the next part.

Sadly 1541U and Chameleon both cost over €100, and neither is currently available for purchase...

Only the 1541U and the forthcoming Chameleon fully replaces your C64 floppy drive. Sio2PC is for an Atari 8-Bit to PC connection.

C64 disk drive? Nope.

Atari-8bit disk drive? Yep.

It's basically the A8 version of C64tpc.
