Cheetah "The BUG" Joystick

I know this is pretty sad... & if in the wrong forum feel free to move...

Rooting through their loft while visiting my parents, I found one of these.
My favorite joystick! Result!

It's got the usual Atari-type, Miggy-compatible plug on the end.
Thinking...
This worked fine in my A3000's ( Acorn ) serial port with an appropriate 'driver'.
So...
Shove it into PC serial port & look for XP driver for the same function. ( I'm thinking of WinUAE here )

-I did say it's all a bit sad-

A bit of Googling later... no such driver.
Does anyone know of such a driver/hack to use a serial port as a joy-port?

( Maybe now would be a good time to mention that said serial port is one of those USB->Serial thingies that may complicate matters )

Thanks

Parallel port.

http://www.ntpad.com.ar/

Are you sure you had it working in a SERIAL port?

However I guess you'd be best off with an atari -> usb converter such as the stelladaptor or something you make yourself out of a cheap PC joypad.

Catweasel was the only option that worked for me, but I have read about using an Amiga 4-way joystick adaptor with software called 'PPjoy' ?

BTW.. I thought the bug was a great joystick also.

They were ace, they don't tend to last long before breaking though.

@ Shoonay:
I'll post a photo or two, maybe tomorrow.

@ Jope:
Yep, it was plugged into the A3000's serial port! There's a Relocatable Module (RM) ( sort-of an add-on OS chunk for RiscOS ) that allowed the port to be a game-pad connector instead.
I guess the reason for your question & the reason I can't find an XP-equivalent driver is one of those: "x86 hardware isn't as flexible as <choose your platform> hardware" situations...

@ Everybody:
Thanks for the replies.

Oh-well, nice thought while it lasted, MORE wiring to do...
...of course my A3000 has an x86 mobo shoved into it now!

I wonder..

Perhaps they set cd, rx, tx, dtr, dsr to 0 (or as input if it's like that) in the chip that's connected to the serial port and then cts to 1. The joystick will pull the first five signals up and you can go and read the statuses.

Here's some documentation for the PC UART chip.. http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/info/serial-uart.html Might not be so simple with a chip like that abstracting the connection. Actually looking at the register lists it will be quite a pain to get it working. :-)

It's definitely more straightforward to use parallel on the pc, thus projects like ntpad came about..

For Shoonay:

Note the black spec in the background?
That's a bit of ear wax from one of the cats!

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I loved the Bug joystick. Out of all my friends/family I was the only one who used it regularly and was able to kick ass with it!

My 2nd fave joystick behind a quickshot python 1m
