Something missing?
When you first boot an amiga, with no floppy or hard disk, it will ask you to insert a disk (usually a bootable floppy disk). The Disk you need is either a game disk or something called Workbench which is Amiga's Operating System (some of it is on a ROM called Kickstart - more advanced than a PC's BIOS rom).
Sounds like you need a Workbench disk, you can get Workbench 3.1 disks and even Workbench 3.9 which is on CDROM (NB: you cannot boot from CDs on the A1200 btw). More info try my web site: http://www.pcguru.plus.com/uae_faq.html |

Firstable, the Amiga 1200 is an ancient computer from the 90s. If you are searching for a replacement of Windows or Linux, forget it. You can play some old games or watch computer demos, that's all.
Yes, you can use this machine with Amiga OS 3.9 for internet or multimedia stuff, but even the cheapest PC is far superior. Trolled enough? |

Your joking right?!
Media Player....???? Why dont you use WinUAE instead, no offense mate, it´s better to run a few experiments on WinUAE before you try anything on a real amiga! Also try this link please! http://guide.abime.net/home.htm |

Have a browse through the many Amiga based forums and websites and they will give you an idea what this classic can do.
If you think its going to compete with your modern PC you are going to be very disappointed. There is absolutely no point in making any further comparisons to modern hardware and software it just makes you sound like a windows fanboy posting to wind up the forum members. If, however, you want to have some retro fun, crack on. You have persevered so far and installed and managed to get running some things so you must be interested. |

I almost thought so leytond Like Retro said you should not use it as a replacement for a PC or Mac when you're not used to it. The main reason is indeed to play old Amiga games on it. I'm sure you can sell it for a reasonable price if you're not into using it as a game machine

Either you use it as a retro game computer (get some games and start playing) or you start asking questions like 'How can I play AVI movies with my A1200'. Just make sure you don't expect the machine to replace a modern computer and that you have some spare time and money

Yes laytond WinUAE is an Emulator, that can be used to set things up and then transfer them to a REAL Amiga, the reverse is also an option.
You can connect your amiga HD to your PC and use it under WinUAE. This will make possible to backup your Workbench and try different configurations until you find the one that better suits you. By the way it may be just my impression but you forgot to mention what´s the real problem your having here. In order to help you we need some solid input first... |

The thing is, you appear to have bought an old piece of hardware expecting it to work as a modern PC and then have arrived on 2 forums asking for help with no clear idea what you want or what help you expect to be given.
If you want it to work as your primary computer system, browsing the internet (in more than a limited capacity) and playing modern games and hardware then selling it is the best idea because it will ever do these things. You will not, without tremendous expense and difficulty be able to get it to do anything a modern rig can do for a fraction of the cost, so ask yourself, why do I want it? If you are looking at it as a piece of equipment of it's time, want to play some classic games, run a few demos, experiment with the hardware and generally fool around with it, then it'll do that. If i'ts for modern work then selling it is your best bet as the money you get will probably buy you something that will do what you want. The Amiga as it is now, is primarily a hobbyists and enthusiasts computer, if you are neither, there doesn't seem much point TBH. |
