External cd drive

Hi guys! I'm new here and I don't know if I'm in the right place.

But I've been on the hunt for an external cd drive for my Amiga commodore A1200. When I've looked I just get confused over which is the right one. It's just for playing cd games and to attached to my existing A1200 because I've got a mass of them!! Where can I get the cheapest and which one do I need?

Mass of them? Maybe you know that but CDTV and CD32 games will be not playable, you may choose from them http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_hardware=4 You may also burn games from Aminet.

Ok, what do you mean 'not playable'??? O_O

They used to be? I had a tower my uncle made and used to play them all the time. Some are absolutely amazing, most are magazine demos, some even containing full games!

Don't make me cry, don't give me nightmares T_T I've waited all my life to play them again! Lol

You can not run CD32 games on A1200 as you can not boot from CD and Akiko chip is missing. If you have CD32 games you can still use them with WinUAE emulator.

Hi T.rex, and welcome to EAB!

Yes, you're in the right place.

Does your A1200 have a hard drive attached to the IDE controller?

If so, it should be possible to connect an ATAPI CD-ROM drive to the IDE a a slave device and run the cable externally so you can connect any old PC IDE CD-ROM drive to it as long as you have an old PC AT PSU you could use with it as well. Also, you can download the IDEFix'97 software to get a suitable CD-ROM driver.

Don't spread misinformation. you can't play all (4-5 that you can't), but most you can play. using cd32 emulators. came one with squrrel scsi and one with idefix i believe.

You're right but do you think he will be able to use any emulator as he made some basic questions? And he confused Amiga CD with CD32. I wish him luck but...
Maybe some other EAB user is from Leeds and can help him?

Say what? Haha!! And here's me thinking I know what I'm doing! *facepalm* I don't think I understood a word of what you said! Lol

To be honest I've not even looked at my A1200 in a few years since one of the power boxes blew and the other one i have sounds like a plane taking off! I assumed there is an external cd drive that I could hook up to the A1200, thinking that's how my uncle did it to build my tower. Not that simple, huh?

I have tried in the past to use WinUAE but I don't understand it fully and don't really know how I could use the CD32 games I've got with it :/

The only external CD-ROM drive I'm aware of which is easy to fit externally would be a SCSI type, but in order to connect that to your A1200 you'd require a Squirrel interface, which fits into the PCMCIA slot on your A1200 and provides a SCSI port you could connect the external drive to.
