030 or 040 which is best to relieve my nicoteen cravings

Hi guys,
I am in a quandry I dont know whether to purchase an 030 or 040 expansion board for my new A1200. I have given up smoking so i deserve a treat and i have some extra cash. The 040 is tempting because it will (allegedly) run Total Chaos alot better.
http://aminet.net/package/game/strat/TotalChaosAGAr6
However, I seem to remember reading that there is a compatability issue with 040's and some retro games? is that correct or did i dream it? and if so how many is there a problem with? As i said i dont mind spending a little more on my new hobby (read obsession) and what the hell the world is gonna end one day.

Congrats on giving up smoking! I believe that the 030's are better for the old retro games - but since we're all using WHDLoad nowadays I think this removes many compatibility issues. The 040 runs very hot too mind, so if you're getting the faster 040s 50mhz etc you may need to look at cooling strategies if placed in the original case. The 060's run much cooler. I have an 060 and I've not had a compatibility issue yet, that said others here probably hammer their miggys more and might better advise you.

Oh, and Hey, welcome to EAB, I've not spoken to you before I think.

Cheers

040s seem to be the most pesky for WHDLoad games (just ask Graham ) but I don't think the problem is huge. Of course you might disagree if your favourite game doesn't work But if you get a Blizzard then you can fallback to the 020 with a keypress at bootup.

The 030 might be a better choice for your wallet and unless you need the performance of an 040 for demos etc then you could save yourself a few quid. Plus the 030 is great for WHDLoad compatibility.

If you are feeling really flush go for an 060. All the speed and great compatibility A fine choice

Yes go for a 060 if you can.

I've a A4000/040 and never had any problem with games. Those who need 1.3 KS TUDE or Degrader came at my help.

EDIT: Just started to use WHDLoad this week on my newly configured 3.9 WB and haven't had an issue till now.

I have had both. The extra 040 speed outweighs its very slight WHDLoad incompatibilities.

If you get an Apollo 1240 you can upgrade the card to a 1260 when you've got more money in the future.

Dimlow on this forum has some experience as does PG over at Amiga.org

I' ve had Blizzard 1230 IV, 1240 and still have got the 1260 IV

The one of these three that I would never buy again is the 040....to much heat, higher incompatibilty (yes I really noticed that).

Hi pubzombie,

here's one of the 'big boys' for sale : http://amibay.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1545
You should have an eye on AmiBay for your expansion board

That one is indeed sold (the thread isn't marked, so blame the mods there ), but it's still worth to watch what shows up on AmiBay.

I have a couple of friends with apollos, and once you try to use expansions like fastata/mediator/delfinas/etc you get all sorts of incompatibillities...

Fair enough - I guess it depends on what else you wish to add later on. I bought mine three years ago from Ebay and I have never had a problem but I don't have expansions like your friends have.

Me neither. My Apollo 1260 has served me faithfully (fully stable!) for years. A bit of time and patience with RemApollo is really worth it, since it gives a very significant performance boost. I recently cranked it up to 80MHz and it's still solid as a rock. I'm currently looking for a 100MHz crystal oscillator...

@PubbyZ

my retr0 Gaming friend, normally I would say this comes to personal preference, an 030 for near enough all games is an awesome card,

I would suggest the following 030 cards (alphabetical order)
  • Apollo Mk3
  • Blizzard Mk4
  • Typhon Mk2

now the only reason for getting an 040 is to upgrade it to an 060,

lets see if i can help you understand.... an 030 will do about 10 Mips really pushed, an 040 will do about 30 Mips pushed Hard, but an 060 will do upto and beyond 100 Mips

now most of that WONT be translated into most games, however polygon / texture and 3d based games will improve tremndously. applications will Whizz along very nicely and some will take advantage of the accelerators features.

if you are more into Apps and doing things on the Bench then I would suggest to plumb for an 040/060 solution, giving you a Power Amiga. However if you are just gonna hit classic games then an 030 will do you proud!

Yo dudes,
thanx for the help and advice. and hello to you too musojon74
I am defo not going for the 040.
And i know for gaming the 030 is my friend so is the sensible choice, but i am tempted to go for 060 out of sheer greed and 'coz i can' factor - besides i might well be doing extra things with my miggy in the future other than gaming. But it really depends on what comes along at what price and when, as I am self employed sometimes i have money sometimes not, but, hell u only live once.
if anybody sees anything around give me a poke
happy trails

I can't comment on Apollos - all my 060 cards are Phase5/DCE. But I know Blizzards can be disabled with a keypress - out of interest do Apollos have a similar feature?
