Winuae and Windows Vista

Hi everyone.

I have just installed Vista and thought I'd try Winuae. The program installs and opens fine but when I use the mouse it's like the erase tool in a paint program i.e when you move the pointer it rubs out everything as you go. I can open drawers and launch programs but then when I move the mouse I can't see what's going on. Haven't tried any games yet (navigating is a pain in Vista) so can't comment.

Does anybody on these forums have experience with Vista and Winuae.

I'm using the x86 version. Actually I'm suprised it even boots let alone works well enough for me to actually use it. Most of my fav progs work in Vista and if Winuae can be made to work then I may use it as my main OS (until I have to by the damned thing that is )

Edit: Just tried it in windowed mode (unchecked the full screen native and full screen RTG options) and it seems to work okay although windows had to turn of some "visual elements".

I just created an account to post this =]

I've had a much less successful experience than you have. For me, WinUAE crashes (with error reporting) before the GUI even pops up. I've tested every version of WinUAE available from their homepage - 0.8.23 is the -only- version that works! Which is lucky, cuz it's also the oldest version that has a working link ;]

I'm using Vista 32 bit with a system rating of 3. =]

I've had a look at the changes between version 0.8.23 and 0.8.24 and the only things that strike me as being something that could be causing the problem is the support for customised floppy drive sounds or the XP multimouse support. =]

After looking for Vista related WinUAE threads around the internet, this appears to be the ONLY one ever, so... this is where I post!

Post or email your winuaebootlog.txt, thanks. (WinUAE works in 64bit Vista Beta 2 here)

Hotcakes: Please try using a newer version of winuae as that version is considerably old!

Bip, that was sweet.
If you read above, you will find out he DID try all versions from latest one *DOWN* to 0.8.23, and only the earliest available for download worked for him.
But I do admit it is easy to overlook the part in which he stated that

First post :)

Oh my god, I thought my Amiga days were over! I happened to spot a screen shot of an old game, did some searching, and found you! (WinUAE and eab.abime.net). Hurrah! - My kit was simply an A500 with an Action Replay Mk3, I think(loved ripping tunes to collect) & 2Mb ram and a HD of some kind, no idea now.. All was lost to parents house - which was emptied to the trash ... but now I'm saved!
Sorry...that's off post...

Problem: Installed MS Vista, Beta2. No printer, Anti-Virus etc... and most importantly, can't seem to get WinUAE1.3 to run now. Have ensured that my user account has Admin priv's, program has admi priv's to run. Dies straight after the initial Pixel Format Detection option (which I canceled this time round allowed before that). Latest bootlog is here: (hope it's not too long to just post into this thread....)

Vista bug. (but it works fine here with Beta 2). Anyway, you need to disable rawinput support, run winuae with -norawinput parameter ("winuae.exe -norawinput") and it should work fine.

rawinput is only needed if you need multimouse support (2-player lemmings, settlers etc..)

Toni - you're a legend! I'll try that out when I get home. Wouldn't have a clue how to do multiplayer, yet. Thanks.

If you're using Vista, and WinUAE starts but refuses to run anything (just returns to the WinUAE menu after pressing start), try the -norawinput option. Worked for me. Thanks, Toni!

Works fine with Vista, as everything else.

Hint for you: install problematic programs/games not in the usual C:\Program Files as you did with XP with admin rights as default, and which is now a protected dir, but somewhere else (e.g. C:\Users\<user_name>\ or C:\oldies).
You won't need to run WUAE or any other old game/program as Admin, which is bad practice anyway.
Vista is much better than XP.

Cant say, I have ever had a problem with WinUAE and Vista. First thing I done with vista was make a new install disc from my original dumping all the crap (shadow copy, system restore AND USER ACCESS CONTROL). Now it runs sweet as a nut, just like XP.

I never install games or emulators under program files (makes me feal untidy), only programs / apps go under program files.

Off Topic
The only thing I dont like about vista, is unlike XP, it knows when you restore your partition. I made a recovery disc after setting it up perfect, when I restore, it always removes the cd key data, and says I have a dodgy copy, then 10 mins later, it auto activates and works fine. Well annoying.
Im not saying its problem free, I had a complete system crash, Just last week. I turned on to random BSOD, which was caused by a corrupt NTFS.sys file. Restored it and all working fine again, .
