Bob world records?
Once upon a time when I was a young man it used to be a popular passtime to set new world records for most bobs in one frame (not including cheats like slowing the framerate).
Are there any threads or web sites with records of records (hah!)? I accidently bumbped into an ST(ptui!) thread where they had taken it down to a fine science of 312 in a frame. Inquiring minds wants to know! |

indeed there's a dedicate Atari ST page for bobs records : http://leonard.oxg.free.fr/record16/sprite_contest.html that explain quite well that sometimes waveform, numbers of colors, background or music make the challenge and not only the numbers of bobs.
I don't know if it's cheat or not but few prods on Amiga : Gurky Bobs (Intro) by Phenomena (420 bobs) Bob Revolution (Demo) by Celtic (700 bobs) Best Bob Demo -720 Bobs- (Demo) by Vision One & Alpha Flight and the famous "cheat" but nice unlimited bobs : Unlimited Bobs + (Intro) by Dragons i think i'll remember forever of prods which make a good example of nice background, music, code and use of bobs : Bobs In Space Demons Are Forever (Demo) by Dr. Mabuse Orgasm Crackings in fact after making such challenge i think coder learn a lot of tricks and tried to use them in different way as for example bobs scroller (snurkel, twist) like this famous part [ Show youtube player ] or use different kind of bobs such as in Mental Hangover / SCOOPEX or [ Show youtube player ] (bobs, stencil, 3D) or Megademo / RSI as well as Cebit'90 / RSI but i'm a bit offtopic Last edited by Frog; 28 February 2014 at 18:58. |

Yes. IMO the most "interesting" is 16x16 in 3 colours and 320x200 playfield.
Plenty of ways to get creative there. |

But if the bob size affects the performance then setting it to 16x16 is meaningless because who wants 1978 TI99/4A quality graphics on their $2000 Amiga 1000.
I'd rather know how many 16 colour either 64x64 or 128x128 pixel bobs max an engine can produce on both OCS and AGA myself |

advantage of 16x16 bobs is that you can make complex waveform and 8 colors for a 16x16 bobs is quite enough to make it looking good. Thus you still have some bitplanes free to make others things.

Identical 16x16 3 colours (2 bitplanes) bobs makes it possible to cheat with
- hw sprites and sorting - dirty rectangle copyclearing and sorting - no-shift (narrow) blit checks - repeated bob data - no-mask minterms - copper-driven blits All of which are the most optimal conditions you can get on the Amiga. "Those who can, cheat" to paraphrase an old saying. |

have you in mind to make a demo with a new records ? Some coders could be interested to a demo contest, if there's not enough people interested on EAB, perhaps you could get more people on Pouet or ADA ?
