Programming a New Machine

I've been following a lot of conversations on the build of a new 8 or 16-bit machine for programming.

It doesn't even need to be that but I programming joy to work on. A very powerful Amiga supported great graphics and sound. A lot of hardware sprites.

Does such a machine exist? People have told me the Mega-Drive was fun to program but I want something current.

I have researched the Mega65, new creations that the 8-bit guy is looking at. I know with the Apollo Team AGA on chip(basically a powerful Amiga on a board) does work but is that the solution.

I read a lot about coding the Amiga. Lots seem to have a common theme. It can only do so much, or it's not powerful enough to do that etc.

So your thoughts? What would you make/create/use that's current to make 8-bit to 32-bit games?

Thanks
RC

Design your own VM. Then you'll have everything you want.

This is kind of my dream... A real 68k, an FPGA for most of the other stuff. Or even an AVR, one of XMEGAs with an external memory bus, because they have a decent C compiler in the form of GCC and loads of peripherals.

If I answer that honestly, I'll probably be burned as a witch.
