I was thinking about buying a CD drive for my Amiga, does anyone know if it's possible to convert ADF's from a CD straight to floppy via the Amiga?
I need to know, if not its pointless me getting a CD drive, Instead with the money I'll just get a couple of extra floppy external drives.

Thanx goes out to anyone who can help me out!!!!

I would say it's possible to write from the CD as long as the files are in ADF format, and not in ZIPped format. I don't have a CD-rom drive for my amiga, but if you can write directly from Harddisk you should also be able to write directly from CD. After all, it doesn't need to do anything other than read the ADF file.

Hmmm...

Does your Amiga have a Harddrive?

If yes you could copy the ADF to disk, then use a program to write it to a floppy.

If you don't you still should be able to do it. You could copy transdisk to RAM: and run it like that, yes... that should work

I am sure that A1200 can read 720ko PcDisk (with workbench), but what I want to know is IF A500 can also read PcDisk ?!

Some friends tell me yes, and others no ...

Did someone here has ever succeed to read 720Pc floppy with A500 ?

And if you can not ( what I'm afraid of ), is there any way to transfert one ADF file from PC to A500 ? ( with serial cable or cdr for exemple)

Cross Dos

Wasn't there a program called CrossDos or XDos which you could load onto your Amiga and that would enable it to be able to read PC Disks.

I am pretty sure it worked.

Didn't it come with one of the workbenches. I had an A500 with Workbench 1 so I had to get it off a seperate disk, but some of my friends who had A600s and A1200s could do it with Workbench. It was so long ago that I can't remember the details.

yes, it should be crossdos

so you confirm that you was able to read Dos-formated 720 Ko Disk with your A500 ?

I think so

I deffinatley remember reading non-amiga disks with my A500, using workbench 1 and cross-dos.

At the time I was using Acorn computers and PCs at school, it was a while ago, so I am not certain which it was. Is there a difference between the formatting of Acorn and PC disks? I deffinately read Acorn formatted disks in my Amiga and I "think" I managed to do it with PC disks as well.

I used a bog standard A500 with a 512K upgrade, Workbench 1 and CrossDos loaded into memory.

Sorry for being so vague, it must have been about 7 or 8 years ago.

Thanks for the precisions, now I know that we can also use and A500 with Pc-Disk ! :happy

I was afraid that the hardware of the A500 floppy disk was not the same than the A1200.

If anybody else which can confirm that A500 is able to read 720 Pc-formated disk, please do it

I'm pretty certain now.

I contacted a mate about this, he also remembers being able to read Acorn disks in Amigas and when I asked him whether it would also read PC formatted disks, his one word answer was "Yes"

He was pretty certain about it.

Thumbs up

Yes you can convert adfs to floppy off a cd you`ve burnt on your PC. This was one of the main reasons I went out and bought myself a CD drive for my 1200. I`ve got a few hundred megs of Amiga stuff and trying to transfer it across to my miggy by cable was taking ages so I just burned all the downloaded stuff on my PC to CD and now I just have to fire up ADFBlitzer on my 1200 and read the adfs on the CD! piece of cake

Cool ADFs

Same here, but I use Codetapper's DiskWiz on the Amiga and I write the ADFs to virtual floppy disks on the hard disk in FF0: - FF4:

Also, remember to use ISO9660 and not Joliet on the CD!

Cody, does this thing work as well with NDOS disks? I tried the FMS device, but it's useless with NDOS disks...

About CDs with ADFs, yes you can use them, and you can eevn have teh files zipped or gzipped. TransADF reads both GZip and ZIP files, and converts them to a disk. If you have a zipped ADF TransADF will have no probs with it

I wouldn't call NDOS images useless...I used to take those (FMS) NDOS disk images and load them into Exotic Ripper which would allow me to rip a lot of mods. Also, when needing to search for text strings on a non-dos disk, there was no way to do this on NDOS disks, but as an image, you can find these strings (as long as they aren't encrypted or crunched..)

Cool NDOS

What did you want the FMS device to do with the NDOS disk, Akira? It only acts as a fast and virtual floppy disk, so it does exactly what a normal disk drive would do with the NDOS disk - it displays the NDOS error message!

I remember that i used to have a Mount PC0: command in my startup-sequence.
this then let my amiga read pc 720k formatted disks inside my amiga floppy drive
either via dopus or a cli prompt. Here is the list from the devs/mountlist file...

#

PC0: Device = mfm.device
Unit = 0
Flags = 1
Surfaces = 2
BlocksPerTrack = 9
LowCyl = 0
HighCyl = 79

FileSystem = L:CrossDOSFileSystem
Stacksize = 2000
Priority = 5
GlobVec = -1
DosType = 0x4D534400
Buffers = 5
BufMemType = 0
Activate = 1
#

simply copy the above text and add it to your devs/mountlist file using a text editor.

you will need the following files on your amiga system.

crossdossFileSystem in your L drawer
mfm.device in your devs folder

now when you use the command 'Mount PC0:' the amiga will be able to read PC Floppys (720k) by simply typing PC0:
at a cli prompt or even better, with directory opus.

PC0: = read pc floppy's with amiga hd
DF0: = read standard amiga floppys.

the software still retains df0: so you can convert on the fly.

most of you guys allready know this but, it doesn't hurt to show a couple of people who are unsure.

Dos-2-Dos

There is also an old tool called Dos-2-Dos that handle to read PC 720Ko disk and also Atari disk. It's not so user friendly but it works. Anyway the best way is to mount a PCx device.
