Angry Amiga 4000 Paula Audio

Hey Yo!

Upon getting my Amiga 4000 back from repairs yesterday, i have now experieced further bad luck. I installed the CSMK3 and Picasso IV just fine. I had trouble setting up CD audio to the Picasso but found it in the end. Now further disaster has struck! I noticed this morning, that the Paula audio coming from the Picasso external speakers are very quiet - so quiet that i have to turn the speakers volume up full blast to hear slight audio. I know for a fact it wasn't like this yesterday as i was running OctaMED from an old Amiga coverdisk and the audio was fine then. Is my Paula chip blown? Can i replace it easily? Help me please!

Regards

I had a similar sounding problem, one day it was fine, the next it went quiet/distorted.

Also have a picasso iv and it was the motherboard providing bad paula audio source, while the cdrom sound thru the picasso was fine.

I sometimes wonder if it was fitting the picasso iv etc that caused the problem to the motherboard.

Heys CU

hmmmmmmm

this sounds familiar.... have you tried it without the csmk3 and picasso 4 ?
does the sound return to normal?

if so i believe it could be a power problem. you made need either a newer PSU or a higher rated PSU...

Yeah, and i been too busy to send m/board to fix it up, if only AOS4 had come for classics then i would have been bothered, and also done some programming too

@CU_AMIGA
If it doesn't come good as Zetro suggested, then it may be the audio prob i provided in the link. I have 2 a4000s with that slightly similar problem. Don;t know how to diagnose for sure whether the latter is the prob unless u handy with multimeters etc.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. The only thing i can do is email the guy from France and see if he can help me out. I will try without the Picasso IV and see if i get anywhere. I was questioning the PSU yesterday actually as it seems very noisy indeed. Maybe it's that.

Regards

psu can certainly cause audio probs, I faced it once.... I also sent a 4000 motherboard to JJB, he fixed it fine, but was pricey...
I wish u good luck!

Right done some investigation here. It lloks as though it is the PSU. I unplugged the CD-ROM drive and Hard Drive and i booted an amiga coverdisk with OctaMED tunes onit it and i get perfect sound. Now when i connect everything back up i either gets low volume sound output or sound output on either right or left (not both). So on evidence here it points to the PSU. Which begs the question, where can i get a spare Amiga 4000 PSU? Is this PSU i have either not enough power to power everything back up or is it just old age?

Regards

You could try to modify a modern ATX PSU but that may be beyond your capabilities.

For a cost you can buy a ready made adapter.

Make sure you buy an ATX PSU that will fit in your A4000D case.

Most ATX have a little black switch on the back - it would be easiest to live with that

keropi method looks pretty good. It doesn't require too much handy work does it? You knoe not using the dreaded soldering iron?

That's what I meant, you don't bother with that switch anymore But if you have another way then go for that.

I see, i totally missed the point. But i am gonna be a little fussy maybe. It would seem daft having a switch at the front and it not doing anything. I might look into keropi idea.

there is no soldering iron on my "method"
just get an amiga4000->atx converter, it takes care all the power switch probs, and u get to use the front switch as normal...
but u need to cut the original psu case, mind that....

you need something to cut a small part of metal, I don't know how it is called in english, you can use either an electrical tool or special metal scissors...
anyway u can bypass the cutting and just remove the side and up cover that can be dissasembled... I have made adjustments now and I have a 2,5" 40GB HD under the mATX psu, if u don;t want to do that, u don't need to cut anything I guess...
