Regarding Kryoflux and bad disks, I don't recover having the troubles you describe (though admittedly it is pretty slow compared to DiskRipper on a real Amiga), but that's maybe just me being a noob and using the kryoflux gui, ripping to adf only (which, in general, does the trick for any (as in 99.999%) non-commercial (scene) or cracked stuff which is my main interest).

As you probably have found out, some floppy drives are better than others and sometimes DiskRipper on a real Amiga produces a working result of a disk which failed with Kryoflux.

Also, cleaning the floppy drive heads can sometimes be necessary, especially when you (like me) have come across disks which hasn't been stored properly - they may make the drive dirty while sounding like something's being torn apart inside it.

Diskripper is the tool. The kryoflux is not made for mass imaging disks.

When your lucky with Kryoflux, your lucky But my journey became a pain when I started to need to recover errors on disks. If you rip direct to ADF, there is no way to do an after re-scan on those problem tracks. I got advised to do a RAW / RAW with ADF guidance. This generates a file for each Track ... like Track01.0.RAW, Track01.1.RAW ... which means you can try re-reading failed tracks again.

I've seen some nasty disks in the past, tried isopropyl to clean heads / disk cleaner / swapped to alternative disk drives.

I think we can all agree DiskRipper is awesome ... reads good sectors, spits them into an ADF. Keep re-reading problem sectors, spit out new fixed sector into ADF. This is something I want with a flux reader ... but the products i've tested dont work on a sector recovery. The insist on a track level recovery, they read all 11 sectors in one go, and output that to a file. It should really ... just concentrate on problem sector / recovery.

I also have that disk cleaning kit. Tried many things out ... part of the problem with flux software is its designed for preserving its reads as it finds it, not correcting it etc. Which is good for original disks / protections etc ... but for "random" disks / head miss aligned / diskrot / maybe bad copy to start off with... then we start to have issues.

Main thing is, we are preserving collections as we find them

Agreed ... think a lot of us purchased kryoflux with the intentions to recover our old collections (where we no longer have an Amiga). When it works, it works great ... the problem disks really causes headaches. And kryoflux isnt designed for recovery / recovering. A pressed disks is going to fair better, than a cover disk, that has been wiped / overwritten / BAM copied / nibble copied / stuff in draws / disk rott etc. These are the problems we are fighting against. Amiga has good CRC recovery. Main thing is, things are getting recoverd... slowly but surely

sTe, very good of you to share your experiences. And yes, plenty of mouldy disks around. But we will archive them, one at a time . Lots of stuff happening regarding diskripping these days, for instance GreaseWeazle and some of the various interfaces available at amibay.

What tools to clean them?

Just thinking of a project whereby you use an old floppy drive and instead of the standard read/write head, to remove this head and replace with a brush tool (and whatever cleaning reagent is needed dabbed on it). Then use a piece of software to make the head clean each track in turn (as in just starts without worrying about 'reading' the disk ... would that be possible?!

This would be a true 'floppy cleaning' tool lol

I've been thinking about that too.

I might try to convert one of my non-working (preferably a PC one!). I was thinking of replacing the read/write heads with felt material (or some other suitable material) and soak/squirt it with isopropyl alcohol. Then use something like Amiga Test Kit or DriveTest to start the motor and step through the tracks.

The only issue I see is maintaining the cleaning material on the read/write heads - how to easily replace it as/when required.
