Ok,looking into making a device that will work as a modem for BBSing as well as wifi plipbox for net surfacing, plugging into the parallel port.

For me personally I am thinking similar to mistermsk, would rather have something for Telnet/BBS use. I have a network card for my A1200 and rarely use it because of speed. But for BBSing the WiModem that plugs into serial would be perfect.

I didn't explain well what I meant about speed. With my current solution it is not great browsing the web, very,very slow. Not because of the network speed but because of the fact that you need a pretty fast Amiga to process all the data that comes across. An Amiga 1200 with 68020, even with the (ACA1220) accelerator/RAM expansion I have.

The PCMCIA solution doesn't work with all the terminals that work with Serial Modems so yes in this regard the WiModem will be a better solution. Further even stock Floppy drive Amiga's can use the WiModem and a terminal. You really need a hard drive and lots of RAM to run the PCMCIA solution.

Looking forward to it as there are plenty of good terminals for Amiga and the null modem cable tethered to my PC gets old.

All the good terminals work with telser.device. But no, the bad ones might not.

and more then 50% CPU power goes to support this combination
and if you have multi line BBS even 030/50 start to crawl if two or more visitors come
same time...

I've never experienced a TCP/IP stack or telser.device consuming any measurable amount of CPU. Consider DCTelnet instead of telser.device if you like.

What about a straight serial port version? I know that would be slower but more compatible for BBS terminal software.

There would be no difference in compatibility. Nice thing about the Amiga is that I could make the WiModem connected to any port and have a serial device driver that can access it. So, I could make it plug into the joystick port, serial port, parallel port, etc. There will be a wimodemser.device driver that you would use in place of serial.device.

All Amiga terminals worth using allow you to choose the driver anyway. People used alternate serial.devices a lot back in the day.. baudbandit, 8n1, artser, what have you.
