"Disk Full" error when copying single file - too big?

https://files.scene.org/get/parties/...rtyversion.zip

I have been copying files from a Windows directory to HDF files within WinUAE so as to reduce the number of files on the Windows side. However, one single file is causing me problems, and it is the one called "starstruck.dat" within the zip file. All other files have copied over fine, some taking longer than others due to their sizes, but this particular file is freezing the copy process until AmigaDOS says "Disk Full". I've been using 400Mb HDF files and I tried a 600Mb file to see if it would fit, but it still says "Disk Full". It even says it early on in the copy process, when there is plenty of space left.

So I can only imagine that the reason I'm getting this error is because the source file is too big for AmigaDOS? At 33.8 Mb, I would imagine so. Is that assessment correct?

The maximum file size on AmigaOS 3.x is 1 gigabyte. 33 MB is far from that.

Thanks for that info.

I've been experimenting, as I said, with HDFs, but I have been using the default HDF type when creating them, based on the "Add Hardfile" settings. I have been dismayed in particular by the 31-character filename limit, and I have some filenames that are longer than that.

What is a good HDF format for long file names and just better performance, in something like ClassicWB?

RDB/OFS/FFS?
PFS3? PDS3? SFS? Custom?

I got the same thing, I turned off the warnings. That's the nature of Demoscene productions, they're benign but they're often mistaken for viruses.

SFS and PFS support 106 character filenames.

Thank you for investigating, AS, but your Workbench looks a lot more advanced than mine. I'm using this (http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/lite.htm), so can I use SFS and PFS with that? Which is most recommended for "classic" Workbench, please?

My system is è AFA OS (3.9 BB1-2-3-4), for the demo an game ideal is the standard 3.0 / 3.1 workbench. If you want a nice system it's functional then all right AFA OS or AmiKit.

Regarding the File System the best choice is SFS or PFS but to run your demo it is also good FFS.

In your system there is something wrong, have you checked that there are no Windows restrictions?

I remember downloading the original System.hdf, and I chose to use WB 3.1 to install the WB core of ClassicWB.

How can I check Windows for restrictions? I'm not aware of any, but I'm on Win10 but for all I know, they've implemented them.

ClassicWB is not to blame, you can see it from the screenshot

Regarding Windows, try repeating the operation as an Admin user

I repeated the operation again by running WinUAE as admin, and these are the results: The copy process of the .dat file, easily the biggest of all of the files on the HDF fails, and yet afterwards, in the second picture, is proof that there was plenty of space for it.

Have you tried to make the copy with a tool like DOPUS (which is installed in ClassicWB) ?

Yes, I did. The progress bar in the copy process filled up and then froze at around 85-90%, then after a while the Disk Full message appeared again.

I'm posting my config and a bug report, which I should've done in the first place. Maybe I'm not using RDB or something.

UPDATE: I also tried DOpus again. As you can see, it reaches that point in the progress bar, stays for over a minute like that and then the message pops up.

I think I understand the problem (only with OS 3.1), try to create a HardFile HD Controller "RDB Mode" (To initialize it you must use HDToolBox)

Use this this HardFile attached (in this hardfile you can copy the file)

It worked!

I added your HDF file ("Add Hardfile" dialog already said it was RDB already) and started the emulation going. Ran HDToolBox but no drives showed up there. I copied the Starstruck folder over with no problems (and it was lightning fast as well) and the demo ran normally.

So what do I have to do with my HDFs? Just click on each of them and in "Add Hardfile" click on the RDB button and then, in emulation, prepare each of them with HDToolBox? I won't have to format them, will I? I'd hate to lose so much data.

Mine i had already initialized and formatted HardFile and made bootable with HDToolbox. If you need to create a new HardFile you have to do the same operations.

Even ClassicWB can move it to Hardisk RDB Mode

Attention, a change to RDB Mode will destroy the data on HardFile!

You mean clicking on the RDB Mode button is irreversible? Good job I have a backup.

So what if I want to do the same to the ClassicWB HDF? Or don't I need to?

Simple, create a new HardFile RDB Mode "Bootable" and copy all the content

Initially, the volumes should not have the same name (conflict), after copying the new HardFile, start the new hardfile renaming volume

Thanks. Does RDB mode increase filename limits, or will it still just be around 30 characters only?
