Roll eyes (sarcastic) Indivision MK2 A1200 works on VGA but not on HDMI

Hi guys,

I did get a new fancy monitor; which is one of these wide monitors that replace basically 2x24''. It has display port and HDMi plugs, nothing else.

I did try to connect my amiga 1200 with Indivision MK2 on it; and I get no signal. The Amiga works fine if I connect a DVI-VGA adapter and plug it to the living room TV, but no luck using the new monitor, with a DVI-HDMI converter. It say no signal; I did try to boot from floppy and keep the buttons of the mouse pressed to boot in the ROM settings but the screen stay off no matter what.

Everything is fine on the living room TV using VGA. Am I stuck with the living room tv or do I have to get a monitor just for the amiga? It feels weird that I can't use anything but a DVI or VGA connection; since all the modern monitor support only HDMI after all

How are your settings like in the Indivision preferences? It's not in VGA only mode by any chance?

I believe I never touched the settings at all; at boot on the TV I see the indivison logo and it goes in 800x600 and then in 1280x1024 if I recall correctly.

On the HDMI monitor I don't even see the indivision logo at boot; just black screen with the no-signal message; then the monitor goes in energy saving mode.

Well, check the preferences. If it's in VGA only mode, there is no digital signal coming out of the Indivision so the monitor would not see anything. DVI can carry analog signal as well as digital but HDMI is digital only.

I see, is there a manual or instructions about how to change the settings? I have only the Indivision app that came with the box I believe; I am not sure that they ever updated it, and I can't get in touch with Indivision since they say to refer to the reseller (Amigakit).

Thanks, grabbing these at the link you posted.

Then which settings should I change? I never touched the settings at all, and just installed the board as is. The only manual I found is the installation one, nothing about the software

I haven't got my A1200 set up just now, but you should have something like the following:

Make sure it says "DVI" or "VGA & DVI" in the Output selection box.

Thanks, I will give it a try and be sure that both are selected. As now I am having problems booting from the IDE connector, so I have no way to actually put the downloaded tools on my amiga

Ok, I did get back to teh Amiga, and made a new CF card.

Now something weird happen: when I boot once, and change the settings on the Indivision tool, after reboot I get an error from the amiga and it boot in the shell. To fix this, I have to grab the CF card, and start it from WinUAE. Once it boot up, I see that the indivision settings in the tool are back to default (I assume? ), which are "Euro 36" at 800x600.

I did get the 2 LHA archives and decompressed but I am not sure what am I trying to do here; because one has the indivision tools while the other archive has also the indivision tools and a bunch of rbi files; which I have no idea what are they for

I tried to send a mail to indivision to get at least the basics of their tool, but no luck so far, since they only answer to resellers.
I will try to set up as in your examples posted here, and see if I get any luck.

BTW where do you keep the indivision tool? I did move it in the prefs folder; while the other folder with all the rbi files is in my "work" partition.

So I think I did get around the whole thing.

- My new monitor does not work with the indivision, period. I tried everything and it can't latch on the signal. I was able to connect a portable 5 inch display which use HDMI, and it was working fine; same for the living room TV via DVI-VGA connector.

- I had to re-flash the indivision; got the process out of a neverending search done online, where finally I found a guy that had some basic instructions about what to do (download archive, expand, "EXECUTE installer" from that folder, then copy the 1.5 tools on top of the 1.1 tools).
Once I did that, I ran the tools and from the menu selected "flash all"; rebooted, and then moved a bunch of monitors into DEVS; as now I can use the euro72 productivity as WB main mode; which run at 800x600. Not super, but it is fine as is on the big living room tv.

At least now I understand better how the indivision works; can't get it to center as I want, but in PAL interlaced high res cover the whole 1920x1080 surface of my TV, so that's fine; and in euro72 productivity mode, it is smaller and centered, but at a better resolution so I guess I will use that for now, until I figure out why a 950 USD monitor is not able to display the output of the indivision, while a 30 USD LCD monitor can.

Glad to hear you are making progress. It is indeed hard to understand why a particular monitor would not display the signal if all others will, must be some very minor difference at play here.

If you want a nice big mode for Workbench (1024x768 or 800x600), the HighGFX and SuperPlus modes are usually the ones to go to with the Indivision. But if the traditional productivity modes work well you can stick with those, of course.

The standard settings for the DVI output does not comply with the HDMI standard which is why you will only get a picture with some displays. You might be able to get a picture by tweaking the numbers manually but this is quite tedious and you might never make it work anyway. My experience is that displays with DVI input are more forgiving than those with HDMI.

If you do not need to use both VGA and DVI, they recommend to only enable the output that you actually use. If yuo keep them both on (vga+dvi) it will use more power, thus get hotter, and you might get more noise on the VGA output as the two outputs will interfere.

The problem is that I do not have any display with anything but HDMI at this point... the only VGA connector is in the living room TV.

Would an adapter work or the issue is on the HDMI connection on the monitor itself? Which settings should I change to use this monitor? It is a bit of a joke that after $160, I still have the same issue of needing an old monitor to use the Amiga :P

The Indivision is very configurable, but unless someone has a monitor exactly like yours, it's hard to say how exactly it should be adjusted.

I would suggest by starting with a very common screenmode like 640x480 / 60Hz which any HDMI display should support.

You might also try to query the supported modes from the monitor with some sort of tool, perhaps http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/dump_edid.html

For this monitor I get the following output for example:

Code:
DumpEDID v1.06
