Thought id revive this thread!

I got a 3.5" adaptor from Genesis 8 http://genesis8.free.fr/indexe.html
But never could get the thing to work - is it supposed to be off PC floppy drives?

I built my own cable and works like a dream (check a previous post on this thread). If you can, get an old XT pc drive because new PC drives don't work and clean with alcohol the edge connector of the CPC (my drive didn't work until I cleaned it)

Yep, you will NEED an old PC drive, like the ones you can make run in an Amiga. Or an Amiga drive! properly jumpered, it will work

Nah, Amiga drives have jumpers. You just have to flick'em until the Speccy can load from the drive

Aye, most true! Still, i havent noticed the jumpers on an Amiga floppy drive before. Where exactly are they and what do they look like?

Oh, and do you literally write a DSK file onto the beginning of a DD? Which means a 178k limit? Or can i create an extended DSK file?

If you have an old Pentium (or an older computer) you can use CPDWrite for writing .dsk files, if not, you must extract the files from the .dsk with CPCXfs utility and write them to the disk with the 22disk program (with the last method you can't write protected disks).

You can use both sides of the 3.5" disk, so you can write 180 + 180k = 360k. But if you install on your CPC the ParaDOS rom you can use 720k (the problem is that desoldering the original chip is a pain)

If they're write protected, it's impossible to write to them, no matter the method
