Amiga 600 and kickstart 1.3
I've noticed that 3.1 is a lot slower on a 68000 machine than 1.3 is (icons take aaaages), and I want the best 1.3 machine going anyway, so...
Has anyone got the A600's built in ide to work with kickstart 1.3? I'll have to burn a custom rom chip, etc, and I'm not sure if the PCMCIA fast ram card I've got would work either. Anyone got any experience with this? What do you need to make your own rom image? |

I wouldn't say that stock 3.1 on 68k is so slow. Especially when you can get really cheap, an awesome 4MB fast ram adapter from Kipper2k and boots your experience a lot more
Anyway, I have succesfully tried patcing the Kickstart 1.3 with supporting A600's Gayle IDE signals and A600 boots Workbench 1.3 just fine from the HD PCMCIA fast ram card doesn't work ofc as the Kickstart doesn't know about the PCMCIA bus. Check your PM |

Thanks mate, appreciate it.
Does kipper2k's ram card autoconfig with 1.3? Is it faster than pcmcia ram? Honestly running 3.1 on my a600 is really painful. Watching icons load sooo slow... |

Judging by kipper2k's thread about his memory boards I saw the following picture:
So, definitelly works just fine with 1.3 (and I think it autoconfigs as well). This memory is surely faster than the slow PCMCIA RAM. Dunno abotu slowness of icons, but Workbench 3.1 is a lot more advanced in many things comparing it with Workbench 1.3 when it comes to workbench usage. It all depends on what you want to do Good luck |

That shows an 8MB expansion, not his 4MB one... so it's got to be an A500 screenshot.
I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I'll ask in that thread. |

http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/kick13scsipatch You need two unencrypted kickstart ROM images: Kickstart 1.3 v34.5 Kickstart 3.1 v40.63 You need RomSplit by Doobrie to extract scsi.device from v40.63 (RomSplit has loads of dependencies, best to read this guide) http://mfilos.blogspot.co.uk/p/guides.html spatch to patch the scsi.device into the v34.5 ROM (Might be included in one of the patch files archive?) Optionally you can apply the 48-bit LBA fix to scsi.device first http://aminet.net/package/driver/media/SCSI4345p To which you also need AmigaOS 3.9 BoingBag 2 All of the information for patching and re-assembling your ROM image are in the guides. Then you need a 27C400 ROM and an EPROM programmer. |

Will this work 'as is' for my A600HD or would it still require modifications?

RomSplit? Where do find that now-a-days? Didn't find anything at mfilos... <snip - prowler>
Isn't it possible to copy the right part from the 3.1 rom in a hex editor and then copy it to the 1.3 KS? Last edited by prowler; 11 August 2013 at 20:41. |

@e5frog,
You have been warned before about breaking the EAB rules by requesting copyrighted files to be shared. One more instance of that and you will be facing a ban. |

Yes, but as I don't re-read the rules every time I log in here (it was something like three years ago) and I didn't even notice your post before I wrote the one above, I'd count this as one offense, please. What about e-mail notice on this board, didn't get one. Only reason I got interested again is because someone asked me about similar things in PM.
With rules in mind, please don't share any part of of the roms, just let me know an easy way to take out the needed part from my own 3.1 (bought new at the time) that I have already dumped and put that with my 1.3 that I have dumped by myself from my own A500 (one of three). Downloading three or four various software for the Amiga to do this seems very awkward. Some handy Windows or DOS program that uses the files as argument and put out the finished file would be very handy. Most of us aren't here with their Amiga anyway, right? I actually found the rules because someone else asked about kickstart roms and was directed to the rules, a link to the rule that has been broken would be appreciated in the future. :-( EDIT: I wrote an e-mail to mfilos and he was very helpful, I don't know why the software mentioned above isn't on the blog anymore but I guess it was a while ago. Thanks mfilos for helping out. Last edited by e5frog; 11 August 2013 at 21:27. |

For the above reason I don't consider it necessary to provide a link to that particular rule on every occasion I have to remind someone of its existence. But, since you ask, here is a link to the rule: Workbench disks, Kickstart ROMs & software or music files still supported/for sale If you check the link you will see that you have already escaped a 1 week ban, but that is irrelevant now that you have accepted the situation regarding the copytright status of these files. IIRC, the utilities which you require for manipulating Kickstart ROM images in the way you mean are Doobrey's Romulus and Remus, but I don't have any links handy for downloading them, I'm afraid. Edit: These utilities are now called RomSplit and Remus. Last edited by prowler; 11 August 2013 at 23:29. |

Sorry to dig up an OLD thread, but this was fantastic information, thank you so very much for sharing it. I think I'll have to see if I can get an EPROM programmer, unless anyone has one and would be happy to help?

If you find them I'd enjoy the exercise. Until then running a kickstart-switch and using disk-games with the 1.3 isn't too bad. |
