In another review it states the sound samples are from the Megadrive version.

The VGA version isn't a perfect arcade port either, as it uses only 32 colors on screen at once.

The framerate seems vastly improved, though.

Wouldn't the framerate depend on the PC running it for the VGA version?
I distinctly remember the PC version scrolling very poorly and slowing down in places when I played it over at my friends.

Judging by the videos in Youtube, many of them are as laggy, while the ones recorded from an emulator are much smoother.

Guess the game was struggling to keep up the FPS with contemporary PC hardware, but gained playability as the computers got more powerful.

yes for a few things here and there, the code mainly. The graphics are extracted from the coin-op.

The Megadrive version is made of tiles here and there that would not match.

honestly, what they did is ripping the 8x8 tile blocks, and then assembled them and apply the palette.

The megadrive has been like with Mortal Kombat, used source code wise.

Well, with a little bit of luck, we can expect that Richard Costello himself answers on this thread to all technical questions.
He is around here sometimes, and I've been honored he participated in one of my thread.

If someone knows him, he could drop him a line to take a look on this thread.

Only 32 colors and better than Amiga? Are we sure that Amiga is 32 colors as well?

you'd gotta be kidding ? this game use a full 32 bits system, and would require a ton of RAM to work, never mind the zooms ingame, the sprite size and their number.
