Workbench 3.0 disks damaged.
Having owned an Amiga 1200 for over a decade, it seems my original Workbench 3.0 disks (non hd version) are damaged beyond repair Is there any good way to replace them without:
1. Having to buy new ones (bah, paying for old disks ) 2. Downloading them from the net (illegal copies ) I'm asking, because I'd like to overhaul my system, and I want to use the original disks for doing so. Any help is appreciated Last edited by Thorham; 08 December 2008 at 17:42. Reason: Typos |

I`d go for option 2 seeing as you`ve already got the originals overwriting with an adf seems reasonable to me.

AFAIK, there's no copyright issue downloading copies of something you legally own ask anyone on here to provide a copy! (can't help myself sorry..)

I assume it's still illegal to download WB disks, even if you own a damaged original copy. You have to buy a new version, or (bad boy!) download the disks.

You are allowed to make backup copies of your disks. The disks are not copy protected, so it is legal even in Germany. Where is the difference between making backup copies yourself and downloading them from another person ?

Sure it's allowed to copy unprotected media here in Germany for backup purposes, but i still think it makes "legally" a difference if you download the disks from websites. Would be interesting to know the legal position these days.

Copyright for the purposes of backup is legally OK, but to pass on disks to a second party, not the legal owner of the original media, is an infringement of copyright.
Be careful on how you obtain these disk Thorham. Although you had originals, you wont be replacing them from an original backup, as in from the original set, but illegally obtaining them to recreate an original set. If you know what I mean. I suppose once done nobody will ever know, so it's up to you. However, for the benefit of everyone, keep EAB clean and please don't link or upload any copyright material Last edited by DH; 08 December 2008 at 21:15. |

if you have any of the last amiga format cd`s, they have wb 3.0 on them
it asks you to insert each disc, then copies the files to your new discs update, i now have the wb3.0 files from afcd52 in a zip folder if you dont have any af cd`s Last edited by twizzle; 08 December 2008 at 22:34. |

Everyone thanks for your replies .
I didn't know the AFCDs have Workbench disks on them, and the disks are just stored as DMS files on AFCD52. What's even better is that AmigaFormat had obtained permission to do so This feels much better then downloading them from some obscure source and it's a million times better than paying for old disks when it's not needed Problem solved |

Hang on though, this is interesting - if the AF CDs are on the FTP is this strictly allowed as they have the Workbench disks? Even if they did obtain permission for them does that mean that legally we're allowed to distribute them on the FTP or not?

Maybe it would be beneficial for this thread to "disappear" and we will never speak of it again

As nearly all self booting demo CDs/magazine CDs contain some amount of Amiga Workbench programs on them - does this mean that all these Cds will have to be removed? In the case of the AFCDs - these were nearly all self-booting and would contain numerous system files - in some cases even different system dirs depending on what machine they were going to boot on. What do we do about them? What about if someone removes the Workbench adfs and then re-uploads them without? Would that be a good enough compromise for now? Dave G |

If the workbench disks etc were put on AFCD's for distribution purposes then I suppose that's exactly what EAB is doing, distributing them throughout the community
Then again AFCD would of held a licence to do this and I don't suppose EAB holds one of these licences So all in all, I suppose these files should be removed unless there is a loophole which allows EAB, or anyone else, to distribute them. Get advice is what I say. |

If they contain the actual disks then yes, they should be removed I think, the rest of the CD can stay intact though. It wouldn't be practical to remove everything that has any system files on it as the majority of disks/CDs have system stuff on there anyway and if we didn't allow that not much would be uploaded here
