WinUAE Lite

Hi Toni,

What are the chances of getting a slimmed down version of WinUAE with all the gumpf removed?

Things like the expansions tab, rtg board removed.

I am thinking something that has say the quickstart options along with some more common configurations (maybe an 030, extra fastram, JIT) etc

What are your thoughts, and the thoughts of other members?

Some time ago there were a smaller WinUAE version with A500 support only. I was thinking too about that but I would like a version for the A1200.

I believe that if that version were created, theoretically it "would have" fewer variants that caused bugs.

But I think JIT "could" be a bad choice because it is a constant source of problems for Toni.

Because it is quite slow in some areas (Emulation is fine). For example opening a menu after WinUAE has been running a while takes a few seconds.

My system is adequate

Intel i5
16gb DDR3
Geforce 1070

etc

Why?

I don't ever use the "Expansions", "RTG board" or "Hardware info" sections but just ignore them... no biggie

...and the thing is that WinUAE caters for many different types of hardware / setups these days

Users have various needs so what would be the ideal "slimmed down version" anyway? You would never keep everyone happy...

That is my point.. Becuase there are so many requests, and Toni himself likes implementing "pointless" features I wondered if it was possible to have a lighter version. I suspect it would be too much work removing features anyway.

The ideal slimmed down version would be what I put in the first post. Catering for the quickstart and maybe having some other options like 030, extra memory etc..

Maybe it is my imagination or my system that is the cause ofg the gui often taking an age to open"

Other people have reported that when using my collection, but I have thousands of configuration files that need to be processed for "boxart"...

It takes about 6 seconds for me, which I'm cool with

Without any configuration files though, WinUAE takes one second to load.

Anyway, you can try ticking "Cache Configuration files" under "Paths" I guess if you have many configs.

Must admit that I've never experienced that.

Do you usually load a config, mess around and when you want to load another config, press <F12> and then load straight from there?

Personally I always quit emulation before starting another configuration file.

I think that too. There are features that are not often used by most people, but removing them should be much more work than implementing them at first place.

I dream that someday some talented coder jump on the wagon to help Toni with WinUAE, accomplishing the wishes of the people that Toni could not help yet.

Sorry for asking loads of questions, just trying to get a feel for the background / what's occurring when it's slow for you.

Anyway, I've been using the same instance of WinUAE for hours when creating "[AmigaCD] --> .HDFs" and never experienced what you've mentioned.

Could be just Windows 10 slowing down your computer.

I'm not an expert on this, but from what little I know there is no way for an instance of WinUAE to interfere with the following instances being executed afterwards, NOT WinUAE.

Windows 10 has problems on many systems but most people do not feel confident in commenting because they know the only solution is to wait for the next Windows Update or try to reinstall Windows again in vain...

Right now it seems fine, when it slows I'll try and grab an avi and up to youtube. This also isn't limited to any specific version of WinUAE either

I still use Windows 7 [64-bit] at home and refuse to go to Windows 10...

I do however, have to use this at work, and am currently more than halfway through an IT project of rolling it out to all 1200 users in the London office.

I wanted to use Windows 7 on my notebook, but I can't because it has compatibility issues with this system (specifically lack of drivers).

No Windows version discussions allowed here!

And also No to "lite" version. But GUI opening slowly has nothing to do with GUI complexity.

First step is to test if all GUI panels open slowly or only some specific ones.
Also try ticking "take screenshot before filtering".
