What is meant by different timings? I've heard this mentioned a lot about C64 video signal but there's no information online as to what it means.

I've seen too many people on Lemon64 have issues with the C64s S-Video not to think there is something not quite standard about it. Old CRTs are usually fine with it but modern equipment really doesn't get on with it. A resistor in the chroma line helps remove checkerboard pattern (which is odd in itself). I fitted mine with a variable resistor as my TV card needs the resistance way high to remove checkerboarding.

The progressive signal is the first thing where things go awry, many descalers expect an interlaced signal. End results vary between no picture at all to forced deinterlacing, which basically eats every second frame of motion.

But even then if the scaler processes progressive single definition signals correctly, the C-64's horizontal and vertical frequencies are not exactly what the broadcast standard is, so that might also pose a problem to some chips.
