The Captcha added should make sure it's a human registering. Then the human can run spam scripts or just spam themselves. There isn't really any protection from that.
Spammer(s) could have registered a bunch of accounts before the Captcha, ban the ones with 0 posts and they will get an email to activate again. Just registered as user "Photontest". We have e-mail activation, so... the only thing we can do really is a harder Captcha than just clicking the box. Maybe a simple Amiga-related question to be answered by typing text, but it would have to be easily searchable or on Wikipedia to not shut out newbies who want to find out about Amiga. "Which was the first Amiga model? Amiga ____". |

Jeez! Mods have their hands full with this lot in the morning. Looks like EAB is been deliberately swamped now, it's drowning out the forum threads!. I'm not even gonna count how many spam threads there are tonight, ridiculous!

This is indeed a deliberate spam attack.
I still offer my help. |

Something drastic is going to have to be done now or there will be no EAB left to moderate! I'd love to get my hands on this plank, teach some respect the good old fashioned way!

Hi guys,
After more than 10yrs as a gm I felt it was time to step down. With everything I have going on EAB was being neglected. If in the future I find I have time to dedicate here then I'll speak to the GM team and RCK. To give you an idea.. I have a new job which I spend 10+hrs per day working, my youngest son has Asd and is extremely demanding and I am mid way through a complex house purchase, add to this the long term illness my mum had (she sadly passed last week) and you can see why I've not had time to dedicate to moderation. I'll most likely be fairly inactive, however I will visit weekly no doubt ?? |

Thanks for popping by Mark. No explaination needed you've put in an excellent shift through the years. Saw on Facebook about your mum, sorry to hear that. My son also has asd so I know how tough it can be at times.
We'll be here when you need a fix of Amiga. Take care and all the best. |

I see you already have google recaptcha on the register form, which is very effective at stopping bots.
It seems like it is a human, presumably paid to spam us. I don't see that it will be easy to fix this. |

Sometimes these dumbasses register, don't post anything, and then make other accounts.
Still at least it lets us see which other ones need to be banned. 2 of these accounts aren't, sorry weren't banned as they have never posted lol Maybe the plan is to get a load of dormant accounts for when they plan an attack for some dodgy streaming service or something. |

If the common denominator is the name then surely a feature where a GM specifies a base name and then anything using that base name is banned.
This would eradicate all the above issues initially. |

Probably the money is being made by the spammer when links are clicked.
Search engines will follow links on eab, these may be counted by the spammer, and perhaps make it seem like eab is a profitable target. So the spammer returns, and is a nuciance for no good reason. The only way to disuade the spammers to make their time here unprofitable. If it is possible (using the forum software or plug-in), one solution is to disable links in new users' posts until the new user has been approved by a moderator. This should not penalise genuine new users, but it takes away the spammer's perceived profitability. With no profitability they will go elsewhere. |

Hope things get better for you, i can only comment on my own experience of my mum dying, in that it does eventually get better, hard as that is to imagine right now. Surround yourself with family and do family shit, helps to round off the sharp edges of life sometimes. |

An idea; a vBulletin admin can set the Member Introductions forum as the only one were new users are allowed to post until a moderator/admin approve the user based on their introduction post/thread.
