when I first saw Super Mario Bros. I thought it was a rip off of Giana Sisters...

Did anyone here play it on an old TV? it's more difficult to see the bonus level entrances.

Judge me all you like mate, I don't have a PS2, or a PS3 and I never understood the appeal of GTA3 so I've never played the sequels.

Surely a "hardcore gamer" wouldn't be playing GTA3 anyway, that's a game for the masses.

Either way, Mario is a better game.

That's nothing. I don't have an xbox, ps1, 2 or 3, wii nor ANY console... not even an amiga (but it's not a console, just saying). I don't like consoles or the games on them.. GTA is too boring for me... all my gaming is in winuae or occastionally a PC game.

Oh, I do have the PSP handconsole though, but that's a must for everyone as you can emulate all the old systems, surf the internet, watch movies, listen to music, paint, take photos or record movies.. damn, everything a PC can and more... = rules..

I played Giana Sisters the wrong way when it came. It's really not that hard to advance to high levels if you just let go of your perfectionism

Apart from the superb music, I'd say SMB is superior in terms of level design, graphic design (!= number of colors on-screen, ffs!), and playability+addictiveness.

GS was an ace game, tried to play it today even But the disk had finally become unreadable. Not whining, took 20 years

And yeah, I've hacked my gamepad to use (megadrive) button C in place of 'up'. Up to jump is horrid (c) 3po

The WHDLoad version supports a second button for jumps. No more hackings, hehe.

I remember when it came out everyone in our Amiga club was scrambling to get it, it was a very good platformer back in 1988, all of us loved it and played it to death. I also remember the cool LightForce starswirling Cracktro with great music for this game. I never played SMB before and only learned about it in the late 90s it was a hack of SMB. And the title even indicates it: Giana is a typical female name in Italy, Brothers became Sisters and Super was substituted with Great. Not too subtle, but I didnt notice it!

Not being an avid player myself, the few times I actually bother with games I look forward to having fun rather than being challenged, and Giana Sisters simply is too much for me

Giana or Mario? not to sound gay here, but this must be the first case of tits alone not cutting it

Good game but not as good as Mario. I like the music better than in Mario though!

Indeed, it doth sucketh. I remember playing the C64 version years ago, and being seriously disappointed. Turned it off after less than a few minutes. The "gameplay" on the original is far superior IMHO.

I'll give the amiga version a whirl though, maybe it's better.

edit -- OK, played the amiga version for about 30 seconds, it too sucks

I prefer Giana for nostalgic reasons, and I'm not as big a fan of any Mario games that the rest of the world seems to be. I think they're a bit boring. It deserves its status as an innovator (or even pioneer) of the genre, but its severely overrated, just like Sonic. I mean, they are good games, but I still feel completely cold when I play them.

I'm pretty sure it depends on what games you grew up with, though. I was well aware of Sonic and Mario, and I prayed for Sonic in particular to come to the Amiga, but now that I get to play them, they don't give me anything at all. I still prefer Supefrog above all others. It's got a certain charm that I can't resist.

"pioneer of the genre"??? pioneering in commercialisation maybe, but nothing else.

That's quite an exaggeration there. I'd love to know what Jet Set Willy and Super Mario Bros. has in common outside of jumping and dying.
