Simplest route to a portable Amiga ...

I have an old netbook (Toshiba NB200) that I'm considering turning into a "portable Amiga". looking to do some 68K assembler using Amiga custom chips, Intuition etc. and the occasional bit of retro gaming, so must be compatible with at least A500 OCS.

Is the simplest route a minimal windows install with an emulator, or is there a better approach? should I be looking into MorphOS, AspireOS, AROS for instance?

Ideally I can't be bothered with keeping on top of the Windows updates etc. so would prefer something simpler, e.g. boot directly into an emulation environment without all the faff of Windows Services I'll never need. That said I like the idea of doing a bit of development on a familiar IDE be that Notepad++ or VS, and access to the internet will obviously be a benefit.

The netbook is (surprisingly for a 10 year old Atom) capable of running Windows 10, but was originally shipped with XP, and is a bit light on memory for Win 10. I'd be tempted to stick with XP or Win7 if I had to but for the fact all the browsers complain about being out of support.

suggestions welcome.

I had an old Acer laptop and I installed Lubuntu with FS-UAE and it worked almost perfectly!

Amilator is what you are looking for. Simple and you can install it on HD instead on stick.

Kill me, but I can't find home page for Amilator.

+1. Looks like the site linked in the following thread is no more available :
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=91638

You can download the v4.9-3 from here (latest non PAE version for old computer with not so much memory).
A link pointing to the latest v4.15 is available in the above thread (post #86 from AmigaSystem)

Could try Amiga forever and build a KX Light boot image. You need the DVD version to do this though as the ISO builder doesn't seem to work (well it didn't in v8).

KX Light could be the best option.

Thanks one and all, I had a quick look at Amilator yesterday, and built an image that unfortunately fails to boot (4.9-3). I suspect it's either an issue with the USB key, or the netbook itself - suspiciously the Windows build on the SSD also fails to boot beyond a black screen when it worked fine last week. I noticed this before I tried Amilator, so I'm leaning towards the netbook itself.

I'll persevere and see where I end up.
Two votes for KX Light may even persuade me to look at Amiga Forever...

Why not use WinUAE with an obsolete version of Windows like XP or 7?

Don't worry Foebane... behind the scenes, Pixelfill has very politely requested a copy of my collection

I only suggested AF KX Light solution as he seems to be after a dedicated emulation rig.

This solution saves the need and bloat for even windows to be installed, and boots directly into WB.

....and....you know...it's legit and all that :P

New version of WinUAE don't support XP anyway, you are stuck with Win7 and up, and real question is why not use trimmed version of linux distro that works very well, as Amilator.

Amilator + ClassicWB is solution in my opinion.

Is Amilator as mature, high compatibility and feature rich as WinUAE; as far as I'm aware it isn't...

Edit: if you want two examples of games to try: Moon Child, and Skimarks (from floppy)...

my original plan was windows with winUAE, but because the machine was so old it kept complaining about browsers and OS being unsupported, my original Virus Scanning solution also refused to update. Given that inevitably it was going to require a rebuild I thought I'd poll opinion in case I was missing something.

I also tried my Amilator USB on a more recent machine, with the same result it hangs at a J character where I'd expect the bootloader to take over. will try to build again - is it possible 64Gb is too large?

I have to confess not spent a great deal of time testing, something else has occupied my time after a substantial period of downloading …

Thanks

Only taken almost 15 years (on and off)

...and of course, none of this would ever have been possible without the main man; Toni Wilen

Besides all his constant improvements / fixes / new innovations; the addition of the "Boxart" panel really made my collection
