just bought a Amiga 4000/40... in the process of buying new roms with 3.1 but in the meanwhile was wondering what would I need to softboot 3.1?

Blitzkick or another maprom compatible program. You'll loose 512kbytes of fastram of course.

An accelerator board with a maprom capability like the A3640 in your A4000/40

If you have an A3640 then you can use Blitzkick to load KS3.1 to FastRAM on boot.

Not too sure but I think if you may have to enable/disable the MAPROM jumper on the A3640.

If you're 'in the process of buying 3.1 roms' then you could always just wait until you have them

Well you could just try to read the docs that actualy come with BlizKick (it's not called Blitzkick BTW in case you need to Google)?

The docs are a good read and there's a lot to read! You can start with a simple softkick of an 3.1 image but there's a lot more to it than that. You can do a lot of extra stuff with BlizKick. Here's how I use it ATM:

C:BlizKick DEVS:Kickstarts/rom441.A4000 EXTRESBUF=100000 MODULE bootmenu FastFileSystem FileSystem.resource console.device NoIDE NoClick romfixes QUIET

Basically it means I use a patched 3.1 rom for use with exec.library 44.1 (unofficial patch by Piru). The rom is extended with various patches from the OS3.9 rom and also with some BlizKick Modules. I have disabled my onboard IDE as I don't use it and it eliminates the 30 second wait after softkicking. Also I don't have a clicking floppy drive anymore!
