Lightbulb BetterWB 4.0 27-February-2015

BetterWB 4.0 27-February-2015

This is a new version of BetterWB workbench pack, that aims to be an enhancement, an updated extension to AmigaOS 3.1, without all those hardware requirements typically associated with these kind of packs. It is indeed a better 3.1 than 3.1 itself!

BetterWB works on any Amiga. It installs on top of a clean AmigaOS 3.1 installation. It is distributed as a set of floppy images and occupies about 10MB of harddrive space.

Changes since last version:

-Rebooter has a fast performing bootable ram option
-LockDevice is a command which between other things, changes the read and write status of a drive
-Icon.library has been updated to 46.4.408
-Fat95 has been updated to 3.18
-Dir now generates a wider and more clear display mode
-ConBuffer gives scrollbars to any cli (configured by default for Zshell)
-A new commodity, PM, a cpu/process meter
-Datatypes.library 45.4 corrects several bugs and is a little bit faster than its previous counterpart
-DOSDrivers for Jaz and Zip drives are included. If you still have one of those magnetic dinosaurs
-Reduced the memory footprint just another extra bit.
-A few more minor fixes and tweaks.

You can download BetterWB from its homepage at:

Thanks for the new version, will try it tonight.
But icon.library 46.4.408 has a little bug i think. (icons will be ghosted sometimes, have to wait what PeterK says about this)

Anyway, really nice WB-Enhancement !

EDIT: is it possible that you rename your "full" archive with including version number ?

About icon.library: DefIcons which are not present will be ghosted, I believe this is what PeterK intended. I am not sure if that is what you are saying. This is not a bug, but a feature.

About renaming the full archive: Why? You can now always find out the version by taking a peek at Prefs/Env-Archive/BetterWB/Version

Thanks!

A small bug-report:

Immediately after installing and rebooting, running some of the preferences and changing the icon set, causes Workbench to lock up. After rebooting again, the problem is usually gone for good. I've run into this in some of the older versions of BetterWB, but I can't always reproduce it.

The palette set by FullPalette doesn't always persist even if some colors are supposedly locked. If you run f.ex. the mouse pointer preferences, it will change the colors on the Workbench screen.

PatchWB still locks up the system after trying to open the Workbench screen. If you run f.ex. DPaint and tell it to close the Workbench screen, and then either open it again or quit to Workbench, the system locks up. PatchWB effectively causes the very problem it attempts to fix.

@Leffmann

Thank you for the reports.

I never had that that lock up problem
Will keep an eye open if someone reports something more specific about it.

Fullpalette does not automaticaly lock the palette, so programs that use most color pens tend to change it. I believe IconEdit does that too.

PatchWB will then be gone for good.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for supporting us!
BetterWB on my A1200 with blizzard 1230 mkIV to my opinion gives the ultimate classic workbench experience!

I think PatchWB was written by Thomas Richter. He's active over at Amiga.org, maybe he would be willing to look into it and updating the patch.

If PatchWB is an equivalent to PatchOpenWB patch then you might try/test notifyintuition.library as a replacement for it.

Does this support MS-DOS/PC disks natively without need for CrossDOS or similar?

@All
Thank you for the comments and suggestions.

@lesta scmsc
Yes, you can use fat95 and its corresponding DOSDrivers located in the storage folder to use PC MS-DOS floppies. For further details read Help:fat95.txt

Thank you for confirming! I presume fat95 is supported on KS1.3?
