No way!

I bought an A4000/040 for less than that!

I had the same problem Wierd thing was that it worked with a 33 mhz crystal (it was a 33 mhz '040 and it originally worked with a 66 mhz and then later i ran it with an 80 mhz crystal). In the end I had PG from Amiga.org upgrade it to an 68060, but it ran only @ 40 mhz, not 50. But its been flawless for nearly 18 months now

Little update... Stan has received the card and has tried first changing the oscilator but that did not help.

He is going to check some other things such as the mach sockets.

My gut feeling from the hanging prior to total failure is cpu so I have suggested fitting a cpu socket and trying with another cpu.

Then all being well proceed with the 060 upgrade...

At least I know the card is in good hands...

Nope not yet - its with Zetr0 now, he's going to have a look at it and will probably send it on to a chap in Germany who is well known for fixing/upgrading these cards.

To be honest I've pretty much written this card off now and moved on, I've since bought a Blizzard 1260 and Blizzard PPC

When it was working though, it was a great card.

I own the same card mine has a 80mhz crystal and 2 simms fitted also but mine was packed away for at least 2 -3 years i did notice the other day that the crystal had disloged (came out abit) so i have pushed it back in, i havent had time to fire the beast back up again but i still have my 1230 card which is in full working order at the moment.

So I am hopping its gona be alright touch wood when i get a chance to fire up again.

Has the battery been removed? If not mate get it off ASAP as they leak and damage the PCB + other parts of the card.

They seem to be quite well built these Apollo's my damage is probably from a previous battery leak so if yours hasn't leaked you should be ok

If you desolder it you could risk lifting the pads.

It should be okay to just cut it off.

However, if you decide to desolder it anyway, then first cut it off to eliminate the heat sinking effect of the battery. The pins should just drop out then.

And afterwards remove any deposits or residue from the area with isopropyl alcohol and a small, stiff brush.

ok just to let you know I have tried the early start up screen and have gotten dianostics says working so I then tried a workbench disk and booted from that and workbench loaded and the other memory states 66,xxxx,xxx

So all seams well for now

@prowler

I am going to take your advise and cut that battery out so it dont cause any future problems and then find a coin battery holder and get that put in i will have a read of those solder tips to pick up some more info before jumping in with both hands

Cheers steve and prowler for your help with this very happy for you help guys

@lambrettadave

Hello there,

I have to admit I most curious with your Apollo 040@40 - you say its got 64MB of RAM installed? does it have two sticks of memory or just one?

if its just one I would love to see a picture of the card.

Yep, thats why mine used to say if you boot from the Workbench Disk, remember Mr Frog 1MB x 1024 KB x 1024 Bytes = 1048576

I use Photobucket to upload my photo's then the little picture icon in the posting toolbar and insert the link to have the picture embedded in a post.

Or you can resize you snaps to 648x480 or 800x600 (maybe 1024x768 will be too big) and use the 'attach' option again found in the toolbar
