New Amiga one & Os4 thoughts

Hey board!, I was wondering if the new A one could be a
replacement for my existing Ms windows based 1Gz Amd pc.

I would love to make the A one my stand alone unit.
The a one case itself is supreme.

I have no experience with ppc`s and wondered if you
guys knew about the support for DivX and the varying codecs
supported, Also whats the chance of using my Ntl broadband
ethernet connection, on my install disk it`s for mac/pc.

Well, why don't you tell us what you are using your current Windows box for? Internet, word proccesing, gaming, production, work, burning, etc.

What function and uses of Windows do you want to replace?

I should think ALL of them!! Its best to start moving away from windows now so we dont get trapped into having a system that is 'locked down' so we cannot do what we like with it.

Unless you are a developer, you really shouldn't even bother unless you think you have some software that'll work with the JIT compiler under OS4, but then OS4 itself isn't due till 2003. Official launch is March 2003, but it'll be available before then if you believe what is being said.
The only software package I know of that will be release simultaneously with OS4 is the PPC port of Real3D. Web browser, email, don't know.

The new board is NOTHING like the OLD amiga hardware.
Any progs that used the amiga Video special abilities, WONT work.
MODs(music) wont work.

And OS'4 will only be 10% compatible with the OLD software, unless you Fork out MORE money to run an adapter card.

The buss is SERIAL insted of parrallel for the hardware.
Where the Original AMIGA was Upto date current TECH. The new board is only a Linux box, with the Amiga on it.

Might as well get a Linux system and Add the UAE to it. For the price they are asking($600-800) is for the Mobo,CPU ONLY. And its not upgradeable(its soldered in) to a faster CPU.

do you want something better? If you got the money, go to IBM.com and look up PPC. They have some with 16 CPU's(if you want to spend $25k). That would be awesome.

They are STILL playing with the NEW hardware and OS. Wait 2 more years(at least) before you even consider it. They have to write more software before it will be released. And the software (What I heard) will be mostly graphics programs and such. They are not looking into gameing on the NEW system.

The hi-end G4 model of the AmigaOne's CPU card can be upgraded. To what nobody knows yet, but it's supposed to be the standard interface used on the PowerMac.
If anyone wants to get into the PPC line, just get a used PowerMac. You can get an entire system for $800 and you can always run PPC Linux if you want, like SuSe or Yellow Dog. Or stay with OS X.

@sewerkid:

I suppose you ignore ECA, he's just bullshiting.

I would not recommend replacing a WinPC with an A1 right now. At least not if you're not familiar with the software available for the Amiga - you should know what you're getting into...

Internet

P2P tools are scarce. Somebody's working on a Direct Connect client, and there's Amster (for OpenNap) available. That's about it. Of couse this will change, but certainly not in the next few months. Browsers are limited to HTML 3.2 and older/incomplete Javascript atm. This will change when Gecko gets ported, but again: This may take some time. The rest is pretty well supported, though we don't have an E-Mail client with IMAP4 support

Office Suite

Ouch. OpenOffice will get ported (you know the story: ..."but that may take a while.."). Additionally Papyrus will be available which is a very decent Wordprocessor (a Windows demo version is available somewhere) and all of the old Amiga stuff (Finalwriter, TurboCalc, WordWorth, AmigaWriter etc.) should work fine (as long as you don't need MS Office compatability.

GFX/Multimedia/Raytraycing

Pretty good stuff available. No big names and no killer applications, but some very nice and powerful software.

Games

Forget it. If you're into modern 3D gaming, don't buy anything else than a WinPC.
