Cheers Ironclaw, I'll check those out. Its the 1987 Predator 1 I'm after, not Predator 2.

I would like to get hold of an original however as the Hit Squad version seems to have had the protection removed (I think).

BTW what does "h Quicksilver" and "h Phantasie" mean ?

Arrow Mick's install can help!

H = hacked - usually some stupid import-tro at the front. If you are after this game to WHDLoad install, you could probably grab Mick's WHDLoad installer for the game since he's presumably done a fair bit of the work needed already.

Code:
 HD Installer for Predator
 -------------------------

This installer requires the 'Predator' disks from Activision.
 There are 2.

 - Cracked by : QuickSilver

The HD-patched game needs 512Kb of chipmem & 2Mb of fastmem to run.

 Features:
 --------
 - Loads fully from HD
 - Uses WHDLoad (available on Aminet)
 - Possible quit with F10 (default key)
 - Button wait added :
--> press 'SPACE' key to skip first picture & intro
--> press leftmouse button or joystick button to skip 2nd picture
 - Access faults fixed
 - Blitter waits inserted
 - Cool NewIcon (OS3.5 only) by Dr.Zarkov

Note : I think this version is trained (infinite lives ???)

It has been developped with WHDLoad V10.2 and tested successfully on
 an A1200/Blizzard040/40Mhz/34Mb.

If you encounter problems with installation script, use DIC, Disk2file,
TransADF or YADI to create the diskimages, and rename them Disk.1,2 !!!

 Mick. (05-Sep-1999)
@Girv: I believe Mick's version is on one of my backup CD's at home, I'll dig it out if you need it.

h = hacked ... DOH!

Whats the difference, in TOSEC naming terms, between a 'hack' [h] and a 'crack' [cr] ? [h] = add craptro but don't actually break any protection ?

I looked on the WHDLoad all games page and there was no mention of an existing Predator install !? Is that because its for a hacked version ?

Anyway if you can dig it up (+source?) or provide a link that'd be nice

The game doesn't seem to be too badly written apart from every custom register and CIA access being prefixed with $ff. move.w #$7fff,$ffdff09a and so on Whats that about? Is it just a case of being too clever?

24 bit address bus on 68000, hence you can write anything in the upper 8 bits.
The point is to break some debuggers/breakpoints that compare on 32 bit values. Even if you know what it does you still won't be able to use that stuff.
Also this prevents hardware based tracing, just like writing registers through dma.

@IFW: yeah I grok the 24 bit bus thing, but I didnt think about how it would break debuggers. AR3 is fine with it

@Codetapper: I got Mick's version from http://wrz.online.fr/ thanks.

@all: I've got the images of the original version now

AR3 is pretty good compared to previous versions is all I can say
Also think of Nordic Power and other "tools" as well as hw dev systems like SnAsm (SnSys) not to mention MonAm

Or: has none at all.
Some previously [cr]-tagged images are now correctly tagged [h] as crackers didn't have to do much cracking work because there simply was no protection; or they simply included a code-textfile accessible with AMIGA-N (!!!) from inside the game (very crappy way of "cracking" )
