Good AGA wb backdrops

well, hello friends i'm just looking for good looking backdrops for workbench that would suit well on an aga machine. At the moment in this 1200 i have 68030 50mhz and 8megs fast(32mb i'm on it).
Anyone can reccommend a good and not much memory consuming backdrop?
Thanks in advance!!!!

You running hi-res non-laced?

Surely every picture that is 640x256 is going to take up exactly the same amount of memory (as long as the colour depth is the same for all of them)?

I'd think so too. Even if the image files may differ in size (due to compression), the OS would still have to hold the image uncompressed in memory (or I'd think backdrop updates would be VERY slow).

At that resolution it would be about 160KB I think (at 8 bit color depth).

Just an educated guess though, since I don't really know how AmigaOS manages that kind of thing.

How about backdrops that are brushes (i.e. my WB backdrop is a brush of about 64x64 (or whatever), that is repeated to fill the whole screen)? Would that take less memory than a "full" picture?

LOW resolution? 320x256? On Workbench? Can't be much fun.

Ouch. That is a small. You either don't need much space, or like BIG icons!

You can use Hires on a normal TV you know.

What colour depth are you using?

Don't go too high with colour depth..

My mate had a 256 colour medres screen and after booting had approx 900kb free chip ram

After dropping it to 8cols he had about 1.4mb

I use 32 colours with my Workbench, which is a good balance between having a nice-looking desktop (Newicons seems fine with it) and having a fast OS with plenty of Chip RAM available.

It's all about choosing an appropriate image/palette and (ab)using what the hardware has to offer. The image below is only 16 colours + copper bars and it looks brilliant (IMO).

deviantART has some excellent low-colour artwork or try converting a black & white photo down to an 8/16 colour dithered image, good results can be obtained with very little effort.
