Fears had a very long evolution.
The very first demo was very cool because it worked very speedy on vanilla A1200. And it feature textured wall, polygon floor and ceiling with copper colour shades. The final game is a pure texture mapped engine that is also much slower and needs a pimped up machine. So an original demo based game would have been cool, and could have been released much earlier then any other 3D game. |

I am pretty sure those Alien Breed-style levels never went beyond prototiping, and it was dropped very early on the development, because Andrew Braybrook thought they were too slow and were too out of place with the rest of the game. That was replaced with the core destruction mini-game.
All those snaps are from the Diary that went for a few months on The One magazine. I remember reading this diary completely month after month. Funny thing is that the diary ended with "We will se the game ready in 2 months" or something like that, but they game still kept being developed for around 18-24 months. So those snaps are from a very early point on development of the game. At some point, Mr. Braybrook was also toying with using a dual playfield mode and have a layer of parallax between the dreadnoughts and the starfield, but he felt it looked to bad with so few colors (and judging by screenshots, I agree with him), so he dropped it. |

I remember Team-17's Overdrive demo being really good, i played it to death trying to beat my times.
The final game for some reason was poor and nowhere near as playable. |

I know Overdrive wasn't all 90-degree corners while in development, but only from seeing previews. Never played a demo version, think I did try the full game via emulation at some point and thought it was quite good.

Back to the Future 3 for sure, since it featured the shooting gallery which is the only bit of the game I actually find fun
(well I guess the pie throwing bit isn't too bad) |

It's not only main character, but also stage and robots, they are different from final game. There were not mine carts and robots in them. This could be some kind of early mine/cave level.

Tricking people with a nice demo It's just like if you meet a future partner and they show their best sides to you in the beginning (you get a good demo). Then as you get to know them better you discover their true sides (the full game) But once you are in it, it's not so easy to get out of it

I wish that HUD was in final version, it looks so much better than that metallic "thing" from final release. It was too much abstract. It also seems that first HUD got place for much more information (3 status bars - probably life, ammo and something else - armor? different ammo type?) and more items than there was (four big slots - maybe for key cards and lot of small box slots below).
Second thing is enemy design - green alien was similar to aliens from classic AB - maybe Team17 try to avoid copyright claims. |

The New Zealand Story Amiga Format Demo (Found on AF001 cover Disk http://amr.rumpigs.net/amiga_format_...89_08_d001.zip ) has better music than the final version, when comparing both final version sound like as it is corrupted (with a slightly annoying pitch bug in lots of moments).
