What is your favourite genre of game? Also give an example.
I think mine would be PLATFORMERS and Gods.

on the PC its FPP (Unreal Tournament) online

on the Amiga it's Action (Chaos Engine), infact there probably isn't one single genre i prefer, i like so many different Amiga games

RPGs!

On Amiga: Goldbox games, Eye of the Beholder 1-2, Ishar series, Dungeon Master 2, Ultima IV,V,VI

On Sega Consoles: Phantasy Star series, Ultima IV

On IBM clones: Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate etc.), Might and Magic VI (not any other sequels), Wizardry 8, Daggerfall.

After Might and Magic IX disappointment, I'm waiting for Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind.

On Amiga: The Parallax scrollers, the Beast Series then a tie between Blood Money and Lemmings.

On PS1: Anything, pretty much

On PC: Diablo, Diablo 2 and LOD

Now for really retro:

Intellivision: B17 Bomber with the Speach Pack Module :hoo

Fairchild Channel F: Tank

C64/128: The entiere Might & Magic Series then followed closely by the Bards Tale series

and last but not least, a real pinball machine, Aztec by Williams. This is one of the old rotary switch style machines along with the decrepit solenoids. Why do I like this one so much, because it's still in my basement

For me it has to be:

On Amiga: Strategy/Action - Like Elite II - Frontier. Having the vast galaxy as a playground, going anywhere at any time.

On PC: FPS/RPG - Delta Force Land Warrior or Dungeon Siege.

I prefer platformers and I'm a good bit annoyed that there aren't more good releases on the PC.

My favourite genre has to be adventures, although it seems to be a genre that's falling out of favour at the moment.

Lots of PC magazines are signalling the end of adventure games (again). I remember when this first happened, in the days when text adventures were becoming obsolete, but then the genre evolved with the release of some of the best games ever, namely the lucasart games. I can't really can't see this genre dying, although I think it probably is in need of some new ideas.

Hard to pick just one games, but it'd be between:- Monkey Islands series, Simon the sorcerer, grim fandango, discworld noir, gabriel knight series, broken sword.

Lately I've found myself converted to rpg's, namely the final fantasy series and the parasite eve games.

I do not have a particular genre as a favourite; a game with that certain x-factor will become a favourite. It depends on my mood what I might feel like playing.

What I have noticed, though, is a tendency towards a certain type of game, which I will attempt to describe:

Simple in concept: hit ball with bat, blast aliens, drive car as fast as possible, drop rocks on orks' heads...

Non-linear, so I guess that explains my allergy to RPGs in the main. And arcade adventures...(old-fashioned term there).

Minimal lateral thinking required. I never was any cop at Dizzy.

Repetitive (in the "football match" sense), i.e. on paper, any football match is essentially the same as any that has preceded it.
Never, ever will a team start with 12 players, or a goal half the dimensions of the opposition's.

But of course (as in football) there is scope for an infinity of possibilities within that rigid framework. Maybe 'modular' is a better word. Play is broken up into segments.

All this comes together to form a game like Slamtilt, or Sensi Soccer, or Guardian (of course)

Phew, I hope that makes sense!

It has to be:-

1. RPG's ( I love 90% RPG's!! Hated Bards Tale though! )
2. Sport Sims
3. Adventures
4. Strategies

in that order too!!

I loved your description of your fav genre, blackcornflake ... great reading

I like nearly all genres... Strategy games, Flight Simulators and RPGs are the kind of games I stay most of time, but even in those genres, there are games I like A LOT (Fragille Allegiance, Knights of the Sky and Shining Force are examples of each genre, and I just LOVE those three games)

My fav genre is no doubt, the Shoot'em up.
In second, it comes the puzzles
and in third, the platformers ...

I also love 3D Space Combat games, like Epic , Freespace or X-wing ... I still haven't played a game that I think it would be like a "real" space combat, but Freespace 2 demo I played came VERY close to it.

I nevet got much into the Wing Commander series, though.../

On PC: Tycoon games (Transport Tycoon etc.)

On Amiga: Soccer games (SWOS)

On PS2: Car games (GTA 3, Gran Turismo 3)

Hmm, I like lots of games from lots of genres, so this is a tough one...

Amiga- Any type of shooter (Chaos Engine, R-Type, Sidewinder), followed by RPGs + beat-em-ups in a tie (Black Crypt + IK, Barbarian), then flight sims (Knights of the Sky, Birds of Prey, Battlehawks.)

PC: RPGs like Baldur's Gate, but also worthy FPS like Half Life and Thief 2

Arcade: Easy! Beat-em-ups all the way! Whether they are scrolling BEUs (Final Fight) or tournament BEUs (Street Fighter), they all rock.

Even though you like tycoon games Minded my advice is to stay away from Pizza connection 2(PC). Yes it has nice graphics but it's too darn hard and boring to be worth it. Well I think so. I liked pizza tycoon which I had thought that this game was a copy of. Indeed it was, except for the removed fun and added need of management.

on the MSX I played Zanac and Nemesis to death
on the PC one of the few games I liked was Tyrian

Arnoud, did you finish Zanac without cheating?
I finshed all Alestes games and Zanac EX without cheating and without continuing, but the 1st Zanac is still an unbeatable game to me.

Tyrian is nice... a good PC shmup too is "Future Dimension"
