For me AB3D was better, largely for the 3D, let down only by the resolution. |

The atmosphere in AB3D more than made up for the low resolution. Steve. |

And the AB3D demo was better than the released game.
Oh yes. |

Alien Breed 3D + a demo
*bump*
For those still looking, here is a working download of the Amiga Format Alien Breed 3D demo as an Amiga executable (works fine on WinUAE with JIT, if it crashes try disabling the FPU): http://uploading.com/files/7ba268m5/ab3d/ This text was displayed at startup (I'm pretty sure the email is dated now). The final line is displayed when the above executable runs: TEAM17 AND AMIGA FORMAT PRESENT: A L I E N B R E E D 3 D Playable Demo Cursors to move around, Hold SHIFT to run ALT Fires, SPACE opens doors & operates devices PRESS K, J or M for Keyboard, Joystick or Mouse. Escape by going through the green door and throwing the switch... Note that the Walkers found in the lower levels cannot be destroyed in this demo! Also Note: This version does NOT feature finished audio or final graphics. But it *does* work on 040 Amigas and *does* take advantage of fast ram! Hello to most on alt.amiga.games ;^) [Flames and love-bundles to "team17@demon.co.uk"] And Hey... you are about to be doomed! Furthermode, I had an idea regarding Alien Breed 3D and its sequel: Since the source code of both was released, and the source code of WinUAE is available, both could be modified so that they run inside a modified WinUAE with JIT (which takes care of the 68k machine code instructions), yet with the 3D renderer instructions replaced with Direct3D and/or OpenGL calls which are rendered by the modified emulator, giving these games fully accelerated 3D in high resolution. This is not quite as difficult as it sounds. The original Doom has been modified in this way (with a similar engine, although still on x86), as has the Marathon trilogy for Mac (now ported to various systems), so with the source for AB3D I and II, and given enough tech-savvy enthusiasts, why not the Amiga's flagship FPS? There was also a port of the Atari ST version of Frontier Elite II which added 3D acceleration in much this way (later replacing the 68K emulation with native code, although that isn't necessary on fast PCs), which shows that such an approach may be feasible. If the emulation is fast enough on modern systems to work in conjunction with such 3D, then this is likely to be the quickest way to bring AB3D into the 21st century. (Mods such as replacement textures and replacing the sprites with true 3D models may also be possible eventually, but I digress...) The only problem seems to be in finding enough tech-savvy Amiga enthusiasts to undertake such a project. Any takers? Mequa Last edited by Mequa; 18 November 2009 at 20:33. |
