Its php, yes, with bash at the end that actually triggers the command. Yeah, that will work, but there are a lot of other cases where it will crap out as well. The current filter is basically [0-9][aA-zZ] is OK, as well as "-" and "_".

So I need a big ass regexp to replace all non alphanum minus "-" and "_" to be replaced.

I think I'll try the "chose an alternate name" route... I'll see what I can do.

Well, I went the easy route.
If a username contains any other chars other than alphanumerical ones, it will be stripped of those chars before adding the user.

The user will be informed of this in a big fat bold text.

It stores the original username in the userfile on the FTP so we can always check the EAB forum name (from now on).

The only way this can go wrong if the user "-abc123-" register an account (named abc123) and another user called "!abc123^-<<" tries to register as well. He wont be able to as "abc123" already exists.

• The anonymous ftp user have been changed to 50kb/sec max download speed.
• The anonymous ftp user have been changed from 40 logins max to 20.

• You can register an account, previously called an "upload account", to get access to full speed and upload rights, but...
• Registered accounts are limited to 50GB/week download.
• To register an account, you must have an EAB Forum account that has at least 50 forum posts to its name. The last post must be no older than 5 days old.
• If you already have an "upload account" from earlier, you do not have to do anything.
• The mirror is untouched right now. Up to DannyBoy if he wants to make changes =)
• All "generic" limiters on the FTP server removed for better speeds with a high number of concurrent users.
• Disabled ident lookup on the FTP server for faster logins!

Well done indeed Turran (and modrobert for the scripts). You've done a sterling job!!!

...I'm sure it's been a lot of work but you've provided a solution that should suit everyone i.e:

a) Given "real" EAB members great speeds / access and an easy way to create an FTP account; according to certain criteria.
b) Provided many alternative solutions for non-EAB members, *cough*, other leechers, and all without removing their ability to still access / download our content.

Short of directly using or otherwise syncing the forums user directory on the FTP this is a pretty good approach that also gives anonymous people somewhere to go at a reasonable speed if they take the time to go and find out the 'where'. If they don't well, they'll have to suffer the slow speed.

I will probably grab an account if that's OK, even though I don't use it too often. I find myself looking every now and again and downloaded a couple of manuals a few days ago. I wish I could contribute with something to upload but unless I suddenly find a secret stash of Amiga stuff somewhere, everything I have has already come off the internet so will likely already be up there.

I have updated the previous release post with eab_post_count.py v1.12.

Function: Returns the number of posts for a given EAB forum user.
Syntax  : eab_post_count.py -u <username> [-i] [-l YYYY-MM-DD]
Options : -h this help text.
        : -i ignore case sensivity in user name.
          -l last post after YYYY-MM-DD required.
          -u followed by user name.
Result  : 0 = user found, 1 = user not found, 2 = EAB down, 3 = other fail.

After briefly being unable to access the EAB forum it occurred to me something was missing.

Changelog v1.12:
* Added exit/result code 2 when the EAB website is down by properly dealing with the exception.
* Added result code 3 for other fail like bad arguments etc.

...your issue here was that there were already 20 anonymous ftp users connected so no more allowed.

now it works, some minutes ago had same error about simultanous downloads.
so i assume this link of interest also is affected by this new connection limit...

We should remove it all together and tell people to grab Filezilla or something instead.

And we should change it to reflect that all members (with 15 posts, last one no older than 5 days) are encouraged to register their own accounts instead.
Right now it only says to create an "upload account".

The post linked in the first post to create an upload account was updated yesterday, but I can't update the first post =)

Edit: Now I get it. No, it will not become inactive. Just log on to the FTP once with your new account to "verify it" and its fine forever (which you've already done =) ).
