I've just tried examining a picture file with the task sidebar switched on, and I don't get that bar with the Amiga-like icon?

I'm using XP SP2 if that helps.

Check this...

Tools > Folder Options> General Tab ensure "Show common Tasks in folders" is selected

you should check a folder containing only images: in windowsXP there are some "specialized" task bars that appears only when relevant content is present alone (or selected?) in a folder
