Old news... and it's not really a boing ball.... the boing ball has many small squares around it.. that ones has only some BIG ones, like 6.

When I saw it back then I thought the same... too amiga-ish |

I've just tried examining a picture file with the task sidebar switched on, and I don't get that bar with the Amiga-like icon?
I'm using XP SP2 if that helps. |

Check this...
Tools > Folder Options> General Tab ensure "Show common Tasks in folders" is selected |

you should check a folder containing only images: in windowsXP there are some "specialized" task bars that appears only when relevant content is present alone (or selected?) in a folder
