CDTV ROM Upgrade - how and what?

I want to upgrade my CDTV to Kickstart 2.04, as that is what I had in my first Amiga A500+, and the Workbench looks a little nicer than 1.3.3.

What is the minimum I need to do in terms of hardware upgrades?

Its worth a few quid to do, but not more than £50 all-in

I thought you could use up to 2.04 without upgrading extended roms?

I assume I need a Kickstart 2.04 chip from somewhere (spares or donor machine).

Just out of interest, can someone explain what the extended ROM is and why it needs to be replaced to get KS2.04 to work?

Is the "extended ROM" one chip or two? Where do I get hold of an Extended ROM chip?

Thanks

Yes, spare rom chip should be fine, from A500+, A600, A2000
CDTV has two if I recall. They contain the addition drivers for running stuff on CDTV.

You have to update them, in order to be able to higher kickstarts.
As I siad though, I thought you only needed to upgrade them if you wanted 3.1.

Why not go for KS3.1 v40.63 it will look and feel the same as 2.04 and you'll have increased compatibility? Same upgrade path as 2.04

There are TWO extended ROM chips in a CDTV (they are in a pair). They are effectively the CDTV's boot ROM (pre-kickstart?) and the CDTV shipped with 1.0 written for KS1.3 and doesn't work with KS2+.

They are two 27c1000 128Kbyte EPROMs (U34 & U35) and the contents of the last version, 2.30 (two point thirty), and can be found here :

http://web.archive.org/web/200906051..._Even_v2_3.BIN
http://web.archive.org/web/200906051...5_Odd_v2_3.BIN

You should be looking at no more than £35 for the three EPROM's (2*27C1000 & 1*27C400)

If the CDTV only came with KS1.3 why would there be a newer version of the extended roms that worked with newer versions of kickstart?

Or are the newer extended roms a custom job, done by someone other than commodore?

Are these eproms essentially "blanks" and the code is written to them?

If the 2 x 27c1000 eeproms are for the newer versions of the extended roms, what is the 1 x 27c400 for?

I have no means of writing these eeproms, can they be 'bought' from anywhere?

u34 and u35 are the extended rom, the original go only with 1.3

you can programm with 2.3 two eprom for replace u34 and u35 for use 2.04 or later

in my cdtv i have a 3.1 with extended 2.7 (2.7 is for a590)

The A570 CDTV addon for the Amiga which had to work with KS2.04. The Extended ROMS are compatible with CDTV (with a few very minor issues).

Kickstart 3.1 v40.63 (or 2.04 if you really want that old version!)

Several places offer programming services when you buy the EPROM's. Or ask a member of this forum. Many of us have programmers.

2.30 (two point thirty) NOT 2.3 (two point three) This was the last one written for A570/CDTV

Thanks for the excellent advice so far.

A few more questions:

Are these eproms readily available?

Are they reliable?

EPROMs are still available although their availability is slowly diminishing, especially for the older and smaller ones, but fortunately the recycling of older computer gear often means that even these can still be readily found.

The only easy ways to kill an EPROM are to expose the window to ultraviolet light for any length of time over 10 minutes or to kill it with static electricity. They're pretty hardy chips, RAM chips were always more susceptible to static. Making sure that the window is covered by a foil type sticker before a paper sticker is placed over that to show the version number is best or sometimes the foil type labels allow writing on.

I know this is an old thread that I am resurrecting, but I am thinking of programming my own CDTV EPROMs since I have had no luck buying pre-programmed.

Are the D27C1000D-15 ICs just the same as 27C1000-15 ?

the only thing to take note of is the last few numbers,in your case they are 150ns.

verify if your burner support 27c100 or 27c1000d, not 27c010 (2 pin are different)

All, just acquired a CDTV and interested in creating these new 2.35 enhanced rom chips https://cdtvland.com/os235/.

1. Does anyone have a good source for them (27c1000)?
2. Can I program these with my TL866II Plus?
3. I only have an adapter for the regular Amiga ROMs 27c400, can I use this one or do I need a different adapter (sourcing link)

Thanks!
