Amiga games you loved, but looking back... weren't very good.

I got into a conversation on irc about double dragon on the amiga.

I loved it but others are telling me it was pretty sloppy on the amiga. I know the amiga had its fair share of arcade conversion ST ports in the early days. But many of them I actually liked. I didn't have any other home system to compare them to besides the c64, PC or NES at the time (Late 80s before MD or SNES). I never saw a PCEngine/TurboGFX here or a X68000. So I was ignorantly bliss and grew to love these games. I still do prefer the amiga version in many cases even though I can emulate much better versions.

Anyways here are some of the games I loved. Looking back on these I can see obvious flaws when compared to other home conversions or the arcade originals.

These amiga games I actually played at the arcades and also enjoyed at home:
Double Dragon - Whaaat?
ChaseHQ - I still love this
Wonderboy in Monsterland - Never noticed it was jerky and had bad scrolling until Retro nerd made an issue out of it.
Outrun - This is really bad, cant play it now.
Shinobi - Same as outrun
Super Hang On - I was told by someone on irc the music on this conversion was crap.... I thought the music was great?!?!?

These two I never got to play at the arcades until Mame.

Buggy Boy - Awesome game, I love it.
Continental Circus - I also think this is a great early amiga game.

Keep in mind I got my first amiga in 88.

I'm sure I will think of more, please list yours, they don't have to be arcade conversions, just games you loved that don't stand up well against other versions or have aged really badly.

Bubble Bobble is one that springs to mind for me - used to quite like the Amiga version but I played the arcade version on Taito Legends a few years back and it's so much better. The Amiga version bores me to death now.

I'm sure there's more than this, they'll come to me soon...

Nice idea THB!

Double Dragon for me too, then there's that split screen horizontal motorbike cross racing game whose name i don't ever remember... Cybernoid 2 whose playability was crap!
Millemiglia, Sword and Galleons both because of gameplay...
but i still love them today!

as for the rest of games i liked, i have some difficulties NOT to find flaws, but i can't judge them out of context either... and i like them nevertheless

Hmm, not many.

Double Dragon oh yes Maybe it's the mullets or just the crappy gameplay
Golden Axe still love this one on the Amiga, but there are better versions to play now.
Strider... sorry Musashi The Amiga port isn't 'that brilliant'... (liked it 'back in the day™' though)

Street Fighter 2 - I used to play this game so much on Amiga, after playing SNES and MAME versions I dont like it.

Prince of Persia - there is almost no difference between Amiga version and PC version but I prefer PoP on PC, since I bought my first PC I have never finished the Amiga version.

Formula One Grand Prix - I spent so much time with this one (and with brilliant O.Roberts editor) and now it is slow and ugly s..t for me

These three are pretty far from crappy or bad games, they will be my favourite Amiga games forever. But only in memories.

Strider 2 - loved it as a kid even if I can not complete first level but now I love only music and awesome pictures on the bottom of the screen, I never saw first Strider in Amiga times
Parasol Stars - I don't believe that as a kid I completed all the levels, now I'm bored after 3...
Kid Gloves 2 - for me awesome even today but I understand people who see a lot of silliness in this game

Just about any game that played better with a 2nd button on the joystick.
Nearly every fighting game that played better with more than one button.

Populous - I have no idea why I spent so much time playing this as a kid.
Barbarian(Psygnosis) - The controls!!! I still like the atmosphere, but that won't get me to play it again...
Roger Rabbit - I could only get to the second level as a kid, now I can barely get past the first!

Not bad, they are great (check my TOP50/100), they "just don't stand up well against other versions or have aged really badly"

I can't actually believe anyone enjoyed SF2 on the Amiga, at any point, ever!

Even back in the middle 90's being unaware of any other version?
I did, liked it until I discovered MK2.
It helped me to beat the crap out of people at the arcades, lol

I disliked most arcade ports on the Amiga.

Originality and home exclusives was where it was at.

Yes.

I played Rise of The Robots, and without having any other version of ROTR to compare it to, I knew it was utter dogshit

Same goes for SF2.

Mortal Kombat wasn't anywhere near as bad so I can forgive that one.

Most games I find it difficult to go back to now are early 3D games, games which are jerky, or games with control schemes which infuriate me

Ditto. After playing SNES SF2 which was a great arcade conversion i bought original version for Amiga (yes you heard it right, original) just to find out it was unplayable. Made second error again buying SSF2T for CD32, although was a lot better compared to SF2 version, but still kinda crap.

About games were better before than are today i was a bit disappointed playing It Came From the Desert which i think is not that great now compared when I played it.
