How to refurbish an Amiga 3000 ?
Dear all,
I believe this is my first post on the EAB My girlfriend gave me her Amiga 3000 some months ago. It's been collecting dust in the attic at her parents for years. I'd like to refurbish it and give it back to her, good as new. My plan is roughly as follows: #1 - Make sure it's still in working condition. I don't have the power cables for that machine, I'm not sure it even boots... #2 - Get a Cyberstorm PPC expansion card: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerU...Cyberstorm_PPC #3 - Add some extra hardware: hard disk drive, network card, etc... #4 - Get AmigaOS 4 running Am I missing anything ? What would you do in a similar situation ? Thank you all in advance for your help Best regards, Sam, from France Last edited by magic_sam; 22 December 2022 at 16:47. Reason: Removed new lines |

Physical steps:
Clean everything out good. Remove battery as noted. Check for signs of corrosion on the board and check status of capacitors. Check any ports for signs of damage, rust, wear and tear etc. Then take a moment to assess what exactly you intend the machine to be used for. Its very easy to go out and burn a thousand dollars and end up with something you'd enjoy a lot less than a more modest system that does exactly what you want. |

REPLACE RTC battery #1 thing to do.
Install full 14mb zip rams on motherboard if not already. While all other Amigas with hdd's are IDE; A3000's have SCSI and a HDD standard. You could replace the <500MB drive with a larger one. Check native scandoubler operation for corruption and replace caps if needed. See if it has a FB-357A fdd (HD) and if not install one. Good for Shapeshifter. Add pregnant mouse if there isn't one. OS 3.1 or newer and matching Workbench install. Add Zorro expansion cards to preference. eg ram <8mb Z2 or <256MB Z3. |

Realistically you'll never get a Cyberstorm PPC they are too expensive and too fragile. Aim for something more attainable like a BFG9060 or a TF4060 (when it comes out)
Maybe a PiSCSI? Which is also an ethernet card? Last edited by alexh; 24 December 2022 at 00:27. |

Why not just restore it first to original working spec and then consider what's needed, keeping in mind we now are the 2020ies, not the 1990ies...

I have a BFG9060 in my 3000D and can highly recommend it. It fits in the tight space under the floppy drive cage without overheating.
