Amiga 2000 HY 200 vidiot breakage

Hi all new to this forum,
Well this is my story, today i wanted to add a second floopy drive that i just purchased for my A2000.All was going well, almost finished just needed to reassemble the casing that holds the power supply, and floopy drives.

Ok powered on both floopy drives start up cool, then the video out put on the monitor is yellow.Workbench loads up,everything is just a blurr.

Next i removed the casing that holds the power supply and found that,i must have dropped the power supply casing into the video output chip(vidiot)and the chip has split right down the middle..

I know that these chips can be removed from A500's,is it easy to desolder and resolder. Also i wouldnt think these would available new.

Maybe there is a hake for this chip?

Or would any one have i non/working A500/A2000 who is in Australia.

Any suggestions would be great on replacing

Alternatively you can build own VIDIOT or based on schematics provided by Commodore or by replacing original schematics with circuit similar to http://www.reprise.com/host/circuits/r2r_converter.asp ; http://thebloughs.net/hobbies/electronics/r2r_ladder/ - however instead HCT, HC series should be used, resistors value should be around 1 - 2kohm max (lower value increase conversion speed) however also current must be higher - fast DAC's usually are current not voltage type.

http://www.amigawiki.org/doku.php?id...ice:schematics
Schematics for VIDIOT (functional replacement) - check one of A600 schematics - Denise section.

Hi Pandy71,
Thanks for the quick reply, and all the info on the Alternative.Building my own VIDIOT is beyond my basic understanding of circuit boards.

I think it may be easyer for me to desolder one from a Amiga 500 and resolder into my A2000.Just need to know if the VIDIOT from the A500 is compatible with the A2000.The pin outs are the same.
Thanks again

It is not hard to build one, sourcing a proper IC would obviously be a simpler and much nicer solution. If you find a replacament I'm happy to help if necessary, have professional equipment here.

I see no reason why the 500/2000 vidiots would be different, but I'd suggest asking someone who knows for certain.

Really don't have the time to build & test a replacement mate, but let me know if you are able to get another chip/motherboard.

Same thing happened to me, the chip was broken in half.
I was pretty lucky and had broken A500, so I desoldered the chip from A500 and installed it in A2000.
There has to be someone with a broken A500 who can salvage one for you.

They should be 100% compatible - A500 and A2000 use same video subsystem.

Definitely worth destroying an A500 to salvage an A2000. You could try to improve you skills by constructing a replacement for the 500.

You're never going to desolder that chip with a 25 watt iron. Good soldering iron is Hakko FX-888. I would not suggest removing a chip with this many pins with anything other than a good desoldering station. The cheapest one worth buying is the Hakko 808, certainly not worth buying for one repair.

I have this Desoldering Iron, works great http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062731
Practice is always good.
Apply some liquid flux, depress the bulb, heat, wiggle the pin, release the bulb, solder should flow inside the Iron, then pump the bulb over a wet sponge or paper to get rid of the solder from inside.
Watch from 44min how to desolder the pins [ Show youtube player ]

Fixed A2000

Cheers for all the info and help with the VIDIOT chip.
Today i called around a friend who has all the soldering gear.Deslodered the A500 vidiot chip, was time consuming, but was removed with all the pins intact.Snipped the vidiot chip from the A2000 as we thought this would be the safest way, instead of removing the pins risking track damage.Resoldered the A500 vidiot chip into the A2000,powered up,booted to the workbench screen back no normal as if nothing ever happeded

Happy days
