A1200 Tower Conversion - Quesion About Playing CD32 Games

Hi Guys,

I apologise if this has been asked before I used the seach and googled before but couldn't find a definate yes or no answer.

Basically I'm in the middle of planning my A1200 tower conversion, but wanted to know if all I needed to play CD32 games was a CD-ROM drive. As far as I can tell the CD32 is almost identical to the A1200.

The A1200 I have is almost vanilla, it has a 4MB memory upgrade (in the expansion slot, soon to be replaced with an accelerator + Mediator when I can find a bargain or two) and the 3.1 Roms.

The CD-32 did have the Akiko chip which the 1200 does not have. You may also need "SimCD32" or some other cd.device

I think WHDload has most of the better games covered, it might not even be worth the trouble IMHO.

Basically I've dug out a load of old CD32 games, and would like to play tem if possible on the hardware I have. I would get more use out of an upgraded A1200 if I bought an accelerator instead of putting the money towards a CD32, also I just enjoy tinkering even if it's the hard way round lol.

I've seen mentions of CD32 apps for the A1200 that emulate the akiko chip, could anyone enlighten me on that, and also what would be the minimum accelerator required to get all this running comfortably on WB 3.9 ?

OS 3.9 requirements:

Basic system requirements: CD-ROM drive
Hard drive
68020 or higher processor
Amiga 3.1 ROMs (version 40.xx)
6 MB Fast RAM

Mid-range performance 68030 or higher processor
10 MB Fast RAM
Graphics accelerator and/or scandoubler
Modem

Optimum Specification 68060 processor with PowerPC accelerator card
16-bit sound card
32 MB Fast RAM
I/O Accelerator
