Check the 5V line on the PSU. Seems to have caused my audio problems in the past. If you can get hold of another PSU, that's the easiest way to check it.

Bugger... I tried 3 difference PSU's and I still get the same shitty sound. Could this also be a capacitor problem?

You need to put a bit more work in to diagnose the problem properly. So, try all of the following and listen to the sound in every instance:

- Connect the A1200 to a TV via the RF socket;
- Connect the A1200 to a hi-fi via both rear audio sockets;
- Connect the A1200 to a hi-fi via the left audio socket;
- Connect the A1200 to a hi-fi via the right audio socket.

If, in any of these circumstances, you get the correct sound, we know that the problem lies with a particular connection. If you find that none of the outputs give you proper audio then there's something more fundamentally wrong with your motherboard.

Hmmm ok.. tried that somewhat sooner...

End result: all of the options produce the same shitty sound.
