The only weapon in the game that autofires is the flamethrower. Every other gun uses one keypress==one "bullet". Upgrades can double up your "bullets".

From what I've seen of the gameplay, you fire the whole bullet. That's 60% more bullet per bullet!

You do indeed! In other news I am on the final level of the final world, using weapon 5 (magnetic thingy) and haven't had an ammo supply issue as yet. I have had to buy some from shops on occasion though - the final world is quite, quite brutal.

What FPS are people seeing if using a pistorm32 with pi 3a? Is a 3a powerful enough to pretty much give a locked 50fps?

Breathless is not very colorfull game, so wondering if EHB mode could be supported? That way it would be playable with ECS machines.

Ironically, grey is one of the more difficult colours to work with. Brightness bands tend to be very conspicuous when you have only 16 levels.

In the zone is Breathless_20231107.zip that you should be able to unzip and use without doing anything other than the usual (protect xxx +E stuff). Use the 060 version if you have a normal 060 (with FPU), LC060 if you have an 060 without FPU, and the last version otherwise.

Press F8 to show FPS (times 100), F9 to give all weapons/items/health, F10 to toggle invincibility, 8/9 to skip arena/world.
Source code is available here: https://github.com/mras0/Breathless/ (based on pipper's work, again based on http://aminet.net/game/shoot/Breathless-1996-Source.zip)

On the (maybe) TODO list:
- Mouselook
- RTG
- Limit enemy movement to 25pfs?
I hope your upload your compile to Aminet.net. Thanks for a great job!

Thanks. I will once I'm contend
Recently got some RTG capable hardware (pistorm) so RTG thing might be happening.. Struggling with properly converting the game's use of sprites though.

Shitty preview attached (don't expect too much, and likely still requires AGA). Also very unlikely that >320x256 will be supported, so don't get your hopes up from screen mode requester.

Note: Devmode build, so no intro/credits, also map is disabled for now (requires rework)

Pistorm32lite w/ pi3a+. Works very nice.

I'm a total n00b when it comes to RTG and sysfriendly stuff in general, so there are loads of issues (also in WinUAE), and performance isn't great (i.e. not 1 frame). "TODO" list is already packed with things I should look into though.

(Code is on RTG branch https://github.com/mras0/Breathless/tree/RTG)

I like it. It avoids becoming too dark like TKG does in RTG mode and looks excellent

Looking forward to further developments.

Tried the RTG-version on my Pistorm equipped A1200.
It ran really smooth. My computer locked up after a while but I think it's my A1200 which is a bit unstable (so quite sure it's not an issue with Breathless).

Does anyone else think the engine would be great for a dungeon crawler, or is that just me?

Or I messed up

Think it would be fine for that, but no way I'd base a new game on somebody else's assembly code in 2024

A bit stuck with the RTG stuff (though haven't really worked on it over the holidays). It mostly works, but it's a bit of an ugly hack overall, and issues are cropping up at the edges. I know that what's really needed is a larger overhaul, but think it will have to wait until I'm a bit more motivated.

I don't mean changing the game code per se, but if I understand correctly the game is moddable, or at least there are level editors. I don't know about the other assets.

The whole square corner raycaster makes me think of that genre, even if it was Wolf3D that popularised it.

Amazing work once again!
I'm struggling to decompress the .7z archives on a real Amiga though, what's the best way to do this? UnArc or one of the xpkmaster-based programs are usually fine, but I'm not having any luck tonight.

Attached an LHA version of the archive. Just extract it directly to your Breathless drawer and run BreathlessRTG.

Choose 320x256 from the menu.

When it's running there's no menu yet so just press Space twice. You can try to quite the usual way but again - no menu, so it's easier to just Ctrl-a-a and be done with it
