Archiving prog with gui...
Is there an archiver for the amiga similar to winzip/winrar in terms of looks and gui? I tried AnArchiver but I find it has too many bugs/probs... anything using the ppc aswell???

One of the few with a GUI I remember was a pkzip archiver. I cant remember much about it other than the fact that it was distributed on one of the early mag disks from one of the big 3 (amiga format, CU Amiga of Amiga computing) nice interface in its day but couldnt find anything else that would unarc the resultant zip files. certainly winzip on the PC didnt see them as valid zip files.
Im sure if you found contents lists of the early mag disks you would locate it quite quickly. But it was really a case of nice GUI shame about the archiver |

I don't think there is anything that exactly fits your requirements for three reasons, firstly most people in the past used their file manager (DOpus or SID) to perform archiving tasks rather than using a separate tool. Secondly, the inclusion of the xadmaster library with AmigaOS 3.9 negated the need for GUI based un-archivers. Lastly, it has been assumed for a long time that people who need to create archives will be happy to use CLI-based tools.
The only archiver GUI that I have used is the ancient GuiArc which is fine on a classic Amiga but may not be suitable for a modern PPC-based machine. The program dondilly is talking about is the very old PKAZip which despite his recollection creates perfectly valid ZIP archives that can be extracted by any ZIP tool, its main problem was that it could not unpack archives using the deflate method which was the default in PKZIP 2.0+ rendering it useless for unpacking ZIPs created on a PC. |

Yes I think it was PKAZIP I was thinking about. It has been years since Ive used it and all I could recall that while it was OK for archiving on the amiga, where i came unstuck when I tried to use it when (un)archiving files to transfer between PC and amiga and one way or another, wether it was winzip not seeing its files as valid or the other way round, it proved pretty useless. Back in those days I seemed to be spending more time on packers/crunchers Everything possibly would end up getting crunched by powerpacker trying to squeeze every last drop of space on my HD than worrying about archivers. :-) Last edited by dondilly; 09 December 2005 at 13:53. |

Good you asked this question I have used Unarc for many years on my amiga.. But i knew there were another goodie, X-Arc:
http://main.aminet.net/util/arc/X-Arc.lha This is a demo version, but it says in the installer that it is OK to copy the keyfile. The author have sadly given it up ... This is a graphical gui like winzip/winrar it looks sweet.. Anyone have this keyfile for X-Arc? |

Yet another vaporware. Oh well what can one expect when it comes to AMIGA. Is there any coders active who code new programs for the AMIGA?

why only french ? the original author is italian !
A quick look at aminet indicated that there's an uk,fr,it,de,hu,pl catalog available well it seems. I use it since some times and it works pretty well... even if i've the feeling that using the CLI is faster... don't ask me why perhaps because 1>lzx x *.lzx ram: As Mr.Bong says, Voodoo-X is the best unarchiver/unpacker GUI as it support xadmaster.library but notice that it can ONLY unpack. yeah, that's why posting about voodoo-x is pointless in this thread, since I am looking for an archiving prog, not an extraction one....

Check Aminet.net before saying stuff like this man ... The Amiga scene is small but there sure is still some very skilled and active coders left.. Thanks Dr. Bong, will test later tonight |

@Keropi
It works fine here for me on A4000/060. Have you tried it on a real Amiga? Have you checked that all the files are where they should be by following the manual installation steps in the docs? Anyone else tried installing it and had problems like Keropi? |
