Tranfer from PC>Amiga

I just got an Amiga 1000 running Workbench 1.3 and Kickstart 1.3 along with a Amiga 1300 Genlock to use for my TV studio, and have downloaded various Amiga freeware off the internet. I have both a WinXP PC (with floppy drive) and an iMac with external floppy drive and need to know how to bring the programs over to the amiga. Can anyone help here? Thanks!

I just use Crossdos (should be on WB1.3 disc if I remember correctly) and copy files using floppies across to the amiga. I always zip them first to preserve the filenames (crossdos only uses 8.3 filenames) - then unzip them on the amiga using any unzipper from aminet.

Since the amiga can only read double density discs, you will need to use these. If none are available get HD discs, put a label over the hole at the top left hand side and format on the PC -selecting 720K as the capacity (or just format them in the amiga using crossdos)

For huge (>720K) files split them up first. Rather than use 'join' - I use a program called 'chunker' - this lets you split files up to rejoin later and comes with amiga and msdos flavours. Get it from aminet- http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/~aminet/u...sc/chunker.lha

You will need to use an lha extraction utility (again - loads on aminet)

There are various serial connection solutions available (some cost money - bastards!) - don't know if any will be happy with 1.3. I've never got round to getting the soldering iron out to make a 9 pin to 17 pin serial cable!!!

You can use the ADFDump floppy i uploaded to the zone : http://eab.abime.net/zone/ADFDump%20(2002)(Scaf).zip
(it can read vfat floppies)

To transfer it on your amiga, follow instructions on : http://homepage.uibk.ac.at/homepage/...l/methods.html
(choose method A)

Speaking of Workbench 2.1, what is the newest version the A1000 can run?

A stock A1000? WB 1.3 maximum.

An A1000 with 2 MB/4 MB ram expansion? (HD optional)
ALL up to WB 3.1!
(WB 3.5 and above [or WB >= 3.9 only?] require AGA chipset afair.)

You can softkick into KS 3.1, which will use up almost all of your expansion RAM.
For that to work, you need a softkicker tool from Aminet.

I got hold of a copy of CrossDOS, and can mount PC disks with it but I can't see any icons. Any idea why this is happening? I will mount the disk, bring up the disk window, and see a correct empty/full meter, but will not see any icons for the files on the disk. I am using an A1000 with a 256K RAM expansion, external FDD, and WB1.3.

It's been a while since I've used WB1.3 but I believe you just select "icons/all files" in the Window menu and it will show all files. The default mode is to only show files that have icons. Atleast it works with WB2.0+...

Hope that helps.

Nope this can't be done like this, you have to use cli or Diskmaster/diropus type program in WB1.3

But what you said is right for => WB2.x

Yup you will have to use the CLI.
And as Severin said in another thread, keep the brilliant A1000 for showing off, and get a new Amiga to use for your video editing. You're not going to get much out of it as is.
