Datel Magnetic Card Reader in Joystick port

Hi.

Do you own one of these or can get access to one??. It was advertised in Amiga Format round about 95, I've sent about 3 emails to Datel, but I've gotten no reply. So I was wondering if any one out there has one.

If you don't want to part with it, thats cool I have the software thanks to amiganostalgia. But what about the hardware, do you think you could take some photos of the hardware (ie the circuits). That would be nice =]. I have checked on google but havn't found anything about it one there.

Thank you.

-Red Blade.

same here matey, I wish I had brought one of those. Luckily the software is on TOSEC.

Some one must of brought one, even digital photos of the hardware would be good to modify a normal card reader.

I have never seen any info on the net regarding this....

I saw it in the datel catalog along with a way of hooking up your a500 to get free satalite tv or something

I will have a look at home for the advert

This product was advertised in Amiga Format during 95.

It is a 2 track Magcard reader and plugs into the Joystick port (port 2).

It comes with 2 programs, one to read track 1, and the other to read track 2.
The software is available on TOSEC , but to bad the supplier couldn't be hunted down.

The software seems to be KS1.3 compatible. Your encrypted pin is stored on Track 3.

Heh, I remember this thing. Back then I thought the amount of money in a bank account was stored on cash cards, so I wanted one of these to have a tinker with mine lol

This is highly unlikely despite being a suggested use when magcards were first standardised, the intention was to use it for offline ATM transactions which funnily enough never eventuated, I can't imagine why . Track 3 is actually a read/write track and is not used on any financial service card that I have ever heard of because the layout is not standardised and most card readers are incapable of reading it.

In financial services the PIN number is never stored on the card only a verification code (along with some other stuff), in fact your PIN is not stored anywhere only a derivative which is why if you forget what it is you have to pick a new one, the bank can't tell you what it is because they never knew to begin with.

damn.

yeah would be cool to play around with bank computers see how they work and shit. but i don't want to work in a bank, wearing a shirt and tie, 'isn't my scene' and working in a cube isn't my scene.

OddbOd: you got a 3track reader? those are hard to find, i've only got a 2 track one. Would be neat to get it going on the amiga.

A company i used to be a programmer at used to make software/hardware solutions for places like golf clubs etc.. where the cards could be used in the local shops, you know like smartcard purchases with loyalty bonus's etc..

Now several years after i left i met with a chap from the company and upon enquiring how our ex-boss was doing was told " He and some of the managers are inside for a 10 stretch for cc fraud ".

Yea i was interested in the possibilities of hax0ring my bank card too, back in the day, thank god i didnt follow it up when i had the means to do so.

it's only when you start using it for fraudulent purposes then you are in trouble.

Did they rip off your card as well ?
