Plese suggest an easy Dungeon Master-like RPG

Ok, I finished Eye of the Beholder I and II, Abandoned Places more than 10 years ago together with a friend of mine.
Now we have the idea to play another RPG on the Amiga again
But, we are not sure which one to play...

DM we once played for a while some years ago, but lost our save-game disk Abandoned Places II we think is too big/difficult to start again.

So, can anyone suggest a easy RPG in EOB, DM style ? It is very important that it is rather easy because otherwise we might get frustrated too early and loose interest. We can always play the more difficult ones later
Also, preferably would be one with real-time fights, simply similar to EOB and Abandoned Places, but the could ofcourse be a upper world, too !

At the moment we are thinking of Crystal Dragon. Would that be a good one to start again ?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions

Crystal Dragon is pretty good but I'd go for Black Crypt.

Hmm, we had Black Crypt in mind, too, but isn't that an extremely difficult one ?
As said, the most important thing is that it is rather easy and can be finished without a lot of training - we have to get into these RPGs again first before we try the better ones

Black Crypt is not too difficult if you keep these things in mind: 1)quests are multilevel 2)characters need food and water 3)most of spells are unuseful, mainly because of the number of them that you have ready at hand 4)compass and automap are your friends!

the others easy games i can think of are the two episodes of the Savage Frontier saga: Gayeway to the SF and Treasures of the SF: both are way easier of the pool of radiance games and a little better for graphics and storytelling (at lest to me); the Krynn serie is the best, but it's more difficult.

even if it's a little different, then you can try Hero Quest 1 and 2 (Legend of Sorasil): not much of a rpg tough.

Perihelion is beautiful and easy (if you get hold of the spell system).

Ishar is easy at the start and gets almost impossible toward half the game (all the sequels and the prequel, too)

Bard's Tale, they say a masterpiece, but i never played more than half an hour

I wouldn't say Black Crypt was too difficult, and the automap definitely helps a lot, I'm pretty sure it's easier than Crystal Dragon.

Amberstar and Ambermoon are both great RPG's with bits of Dungeon Master and bits of Shining Force in them.

These two games are much more Story / Mission based, and the stories are very engrossing, and the worlds are HUGE.

Ambermoon's 3D'ish sections are look in any direction and not just 90 degrees.

Another vote for Black Crypt as it's not too hard.

There are some very nice levels design/gfx wise & a good music score iirc. Plus it's not HUGE ala DM/CSB or the Bards Tale series which would take A LONG time to play.

I thought the Bards Tale series was superb for its time. Where did i put those maps?

Never really got into the Amberstar/moon series but wish I had as Thalion did produce some excellent games. Thanks for posting a link to the Thalion shrine i shall be downloading a few

Does anyone remember Blade of Destiny? I just found the music - excellent game. Turn based combat and quite involved - huge play area as well.

or Realms of Arkania if you like, though the combat is turn based ala D&D games.
Huge game, huge character choices, not that difficult to play though.

Ok, guys, thanx for all suggestions !!
So we will give Black Crypt and Amberstar a try

The SSI series games, Bard's Tale and Ultima series are not in that style we like - we are used to the ones which are similar to Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder & Abandoned Places.
Bloodwyche would be cool, too, but that's the only DM style game which also exists on the C64 and I want to play that with another friend on the good old 64

Anybody has played Dungeons of Avalon I & II ? Are they good ? Difficult/Easy ?

Also, what about the Black Dawn series ? I think there exist some DM style RPGs from these series , too !?

Also, can Captive and Knightmare be finished ? Look quite good, too !

i give you my personal token: Dungeon of Avalon' inventory system, combat system and monsters respawning are utterly CRAP: unusable, slow, dumb... they just ruin a graphically nice game.

knightmare looked cool to me too, but it's like to have your sensory system scrambled and broken and trying to make work a washing machine with inuit localized commands and with arms cutted. yes the game interface is SO good.

Captive: the dungeon crawling is good but i still couldn't climb out of the ship at least ONE time (but this probably is my fault, i never had manuals for that).

Captive 2 Liberation: cool game but just too big, hard and somewhat it makes you sick because its slowness in interface and progress.

I always enjoyed the simplicity and ace-ness of Might and Magic book 2 :-)

Ok, thanks guys !
We have started playing Black Crypt now. I found the complete manual online so it is easier to play
We also took a look at Dungeons of Avalon, but unfortunately it has strategic fighting which is little bit boring ( you cannot see monsters from distance... )

Also, EOB III is a nice suggestion, but it was never released for the Amiga. But maybe we will play it on PC after we have played Black Crypt.
Is EOB III harder/longer than the first 2 parts ?

I don't know if it's longer or harder mainly because I didn't play it long enough because I found it a lot more boring! The third game of course was not designed by Westwood and it shows If you do want to play a PC game go for Lands of Lore which is by Westwood and is bloody excellent.
